Calling someting "too cliche" isn't a legit criticism.
Prove me wrong.
I agree. Everything is derivative and relies on our collective understanding of what a narrative should be in some way - the key is to use cliches and stock characters creatively.
It's legit, just not a good one. If something is super cliche it has to be spectacular in some other way for people to enjoy it.

I agree that cliches aren't inherently bad, but a work that fails to do anything different is a waste of time.
It depends on what you mean by cliched.
If it's cliched even down to its execution then it might be so predictable and by the numbers it's boring and basically nothing you haven't seen before.
Being cliched but differing in execution or subverting certain conventions is how it works.
So making a fantasy cartoon that looks like your typical fantasy and plays out like your typical fantasy to the end and defies no expectations then it's probably going to be pretty boring. I'm sure some people like that but it's still a valid criticism.

criticism is ultimately still based on your personal experience with the work in question.
There's nothing illegitimate about saying 'this work failed to impress or surprise me because from beginning to end it was nothing I hadn't seen before and it never defied by expectations, diminishing any entertainment I might have wrought from it.
That's why we refer to certain works as entry level. There's nothing inherently wrong with something being entry level, but you can only enjoy a handful of entry level works within a genre before you need to start branching out to keep enjoying the genre

>Calling someting "unoriginal" isn't a legit criticism
Just saying random shit doesn't make it true.
