I'm currently reading X-Men from the beginning and loving it. I'm at Uncanny X-Men 131 right now (1980, Emma Frost just showed up).
When do I stop reading? When do the comics get bad?
Around the time that you stop enjoying them

After AOA.

I am a huge fan of Emma Frost, and even I have to admit, Claremont wrote one hell of a great evil White Queen.
I stop reading the Phoenix Saga when the Hellfire section was resolved. I've read the entire Saga all the way through, but on every subsequent reading I stop after the Hellfire Club is defeated.

Stop reading when they get bad.
How did you find the Proteus arc?

ThisPersonally I stopped in 1992.

I think I went to 250 or so.
Cockrum is my favorite x-artists. Brood saga is one of my favorite superhero stories of all time.
Pretty good stuff for binge reading. Imo.

Like other people said that's up to you.
Personally I jump ship once Onslaught becomes a thing.

This. AoA itself wasn't bad at all, but the X-books took a nosedive in quality afterwards.
I stuck around after that, but dropped them entirely around the Twelve. I've only sporadically dabbled since then.

Personally I think it heads downhill after Mutant Massacre, with 213 being a nice jumping off point. The second Brood and first Genosha arcs are great though. Inferno is a clusterfuck and everything after is a miss for me. I'd also recommend reading New Mutants in parallel from issues 14 to 46ish.
