It's never mentioned how he posessed him, and Blendin fucks off back to the future a few scenes later and is never seen again. Plus, it's not like Bill couldn't talk Mabel into knowingly making a deal with him and tricking her, she's not exactly smart and she was in a low emotional state at the time.

The possession thing only seems to make things less interesting and cause several plot holes.
