Anna's antagonist.
Hans originally sailed in to try to marry Elsa, without plans of murder. This is also mentioned in a semi-canon book. But then when "no-one was getting anywhere with Elsa", he didn't wanna return home and happened to run into Anna and notice how desperate for romance she was, he just shifted targets on the fly and figured that he'd get married to princess first-in-line first and then think of something later. Then when things got more and more dire he eventually decided to just fuck it all and go for the throne alone and try to pull a coup.

He's written kinda weirdly. For most of the movie, he's sort of a scheming asshole golddigger trying to marry a woman he dislikes for profit - who nevertheless takes good care of the kingdom, risks his own life in trying to find and rescue Anna and also saves Elsa from becoming a murderer and also getting shot, and who seems to express actual distress (though briefly) when he realises each sister is going to die. He also believes that Elsa murdered Anna intentionally when he goes after her with the sword, since that's how Anna described the events to him.

But then there's the gloating villain monologue, where he claims he planned to have Elsa killed ever since he decided to pursue Anna instead of Elsa, to clear the way to the throne. Which doesn't make sense regarding how he saved her life in the Ice Palace.

Nevertheless he's more Anna's villain, because Anna is the one he lied to more and whose emotions he exploited and who he betrayed more personally.

Nah, Hans was always the red herring foil to the real love interest who was Kristoff, he was never quite good, but apparently at some point wasn't as blatantly malicious. Even when Elsa was full evil, Hans was meant to have some sort of bad flaws so that Anna could ditch him for Kristoff without looking like a total whore.

However I really get the feeling that they wrote Hans to be a lot more morally grey and ambiguous character, but then someone just decided that it's not obvious enough, that the audience must be made to understand with 100% clarity that he's supposed to be the bad guy, and so they added the hammy mustache twirling monologue.

The early scenes show him as struggling to keep smiling in many instances, when he's just met Anna his smile is sincere, but during the party the longer he spends around her the more forced his smiles become. It's really well done actually, you can really see how he goes from liking to loathing her
