Bob was one of the three or so Supers who was actually close to invulnerable. The others could fly or shoot lasers out of their eyes but they were otherwise every bit as weak as normal humans, hence the high mortality rate. There's no shortage of flying bricks in regular cape bricks, Bob's success as a professional hero was largely due to the fact that he was one in a world where superheroes frequently died from basic wardrobe malfunctions. It's also why Edna's own modern costumes place so much emphasis on protection, she had to see a lot of the superheroes she knew and loved die because the technology wasn't there to keep them safe.
