Hey /co/, I'm trying not to buy a sword, so I was looking for recent comic recommendations. I was looking at Rebirth specifically. Pls help.

Why aren't you trying to buy a sword? Are you some sort of sissy?
SPAGHETTI TIME.
>>93029227
I was looking at swords as I was becoming more into HEMA and European history, but an okay sword, like the one I posted in OP is 200-300 dollars and high end reproductions with modern steel are 800-1200 dollars. Trades are like, 15-20 bucks.

I suppose I might as well ask, are the Prince Valiant comics good? I remember seeing snippets in the newspaper.
>>93029386
They are but are harder to display on your wall. You almost have to go horizontal with them and then they take up far too much. You can go vertical but you need something to set with it, either a pair or something else large to put next to it.
>>93029337
wow, you are not shopping in the right places man. Look online for sword and you can find stuff for half that. I have a folded steel katana that only cost me 300, came with the handle separate so you could see the tang was signed by the forger and everything.

The thing about Katanas is that they are so popular that you can get really good ones for around the same price as an just okay European sword. A conpany like Albion charges the near 1000 dollar price as they recreate original forging techniques with modern steel.
>>93029595
>that price
da fuck?! If I was a millionaire that would be owned by me though.
>>93029651
true, european swords are more expensive but price hunt and you should be finding cheeper than that.

Wouldn't you just get a spear with a cutting edge? They had those in Europe right?

What would you even do with a sword? You're just going to look at it and wish you spent the money on something else, like a gun.
>>93030565
It's an appreciation of old European culture. You could buy a blunted sword or a synthetic one to learn European Martial Arts. It's a cool wall ornament. I can't hang my pistol on the wall and get the same sense and appreciation you'd get from a sword.
>>93030870
Ignoring the bit about old European culture and its traditions of slaughtering peasants with fine steel work, I feel like you and I both agree that it's basically just a decoration (you're never going to apply European martial arts unless you're carrying your sword around to the local clubs). I'd rather get a tapestry or a recreation of some old religious work rather than a heavy metal replica that can't defend me against an intruder with a gun any better than a baseball bat.
>>93029386
yes
>>93029214
The only sword worth having is a sword that is made to be used. Most of the swords you're going to buy are made for display or reenactments, or are just plain shit. And I would hardly know where to look for a sword made for actual combat, maybe a commission piece from a friend of a friend who does metal smith work for Renaissance Fairs. Even then, it would probably snap after a couple of heavy swipes into a hunk of meat.
Actual swords are not as grand and romantic as fiction makes them out to be. They are either heavy or fragile, require constant maintenance, and it will just end up taking up space in your room and be that one thing you and/or friend occasionally pick up and swing around when you're drunk and/or high.

What are you doing in a cartoon board, /k/?

Swords are great to have for
>Costumes
>wall ornaments
>D&D props
>fruit ninja
>threatening children at halloween
>scaring away Jehovah witnesses
>pretending you are Immortal and running around the woods with, video very related https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VBdAY8eA9w
>testing out armour
>testing out the blade on a carcass
>being obnoxious like this post
>>93031058
>heavy metal replica
That's if you're an idiot and buy fantasy swords. You can instead get something like pic related which has historical swords and looks awesome.
>can't defend me against an intruder with a gun any better than a baseball bat.
You can still own a gun.
>>93031246
>Actual swords are not as grand and romantic as fiction makes them out to be. They are either heavy or fragile
Absolute rubbish. Actual swords are supposed to be light and flexible and if they're not it means the manufacturer didn't know what he was doing.
>CRASH
>BANG
>SLASH
that's all it takes for someone to break into your home and cut down your whole family
what's your excuse for not having a sword to protect yourself?
>>93031698
>Actual swords are supposed to be light and flexible
>flexible
That depends on the kind of sword. Some of them, not all, but some that are designed specifically for thrusting do tend to have stiff blades.
But yeah, for most other swords, flexibility is a must to prevent the thing from breaking.
>>93032429
Yeah I know, but that guy is an idiot who thinks swords are supposed to be fragile.
>>93032517
>but that guy is an idiot who thinks swords are supposed to be fragile.
I wasn't contesting that. He is an idiot, and they're indeed not fragile. Unless made very poorly or with shit materials. Like the typical $20 wallhanger or dollar store katana to go with a fedora.
>>93029214
Buy the damn sword if you want it. I have several.
>>93029386
Polearms for functionality, swords for aesthetic.
>>93031249
Just hanging around.
>>93029386
I like the one that looks like a fist holding a dagger.
>>93035383
Halberds are the most aesthetic weapon.
>>93035954
Can you Deus Vult with a halberd? I think not.
