Bart Vs Lisa Vs The Third Grade. Shit had been declining hard up until then, but every episode had at least one joke I could get a smile out of. Even godawful episodes like The Frying Game, or Tennis the Menace. Not this piece of shit episode. This was the point where I stopped watching new episodes of simpsons. I probably should have stopped sooner, but I kept holding out hope things would improve.

I didn't pay much attention to it. Especially since networks never really seemed to air stuff in order around here. They also often aired things as a double feature from different seasons or as a viewer's choice marathon. So there was tons of good old stuff still airing.

I only noticed that new Simpsons was entirely boring and pointless after the movie when channels started really advertising new Simpsons episodes at prime time and none of those were worth watching in the slightest.

Yeah James L. Brooks has a fetish for melodrama without any jokes to lighten it up. Al Jean and Mike Reiss, after taking over as showrunners in Season 3, did make the show a lot more humorous and not as grimdark.

Tennis the Menace. The first two minutes fucking killed the show for me. Bart playing with the kitchen faucet to change the water temperature in the shower and making Homer scream out Beethoven's 5th. It wasn't funny, and it went on for so god damned long. I actually like seasons 1-2 for their melodrama though. They're charming in a way that reminds me of Charlie Brown. Especially the episode "Bart the General", which feels more like one of those cartoons you would watch in class in school i.e. Schoolhouse Rock, as opposed to the golden age of seasons 3-8 which has more of a "sitcommy", Seinfeldy feel to it (not to say that feel wasn't great).

To preface my rage, I feel the need to mention that I've never enjoyed the practice of airing random episodes. I don't know why reruns weren't in order and it has always bothered the fuck out of me, especially after having seen the first half of Who Shot Mr. Burns for the thousandth time.

Pretty much this when you compare how they parody stuff now to things like Cape Fear it really is just a lazy parody. They aren't doing it because they loved the thing they are parodying like all the Citizen Kane references in earlier seasons or they have a character that they can perfectly use that parody as a vehicle for like Bob in the Cape Fear episode.

Now this is more a problem id say with modern times and how things a parodied inception gets a trailer parodies are made the movie comes out later that week you have 20 youtube video parodies and multiple shows doing it. So when the show has to wait a year to write and animate an episode that is a parody of the movie it really does feel like it comes way too late.
