Anyone remember Pictures for Sad Children?
Where did it go wrong?
Is the creator okay?

It went downhill when he got into that fight with Kate Beaton, then he hit rock bottom with his Kickstarter fiasco.

>It went downhill when he got into that fight with Kate Beaton
i never heard if that part

Creator started a Kickstarter for a book collection of his strips.
Then he ended the Kickstarter early.
Then he took his site down.
Then he started uploading videos of him burning copies of the books he had printed and telling people who hadn't already gotten their copy they wouldn't be getting any.
That's the last I heard from him.
He did a webcomic for Birdman when it was coming out.

Not entirely accurate. The Kickstarter campaigned was launched and completed, but was way bigger than John anticipated. Think the goal was under 10 thousands, and they ended up getting over 50 grand.
Anyway, somewhere into that, John had a breakdown and posted some shit about how he wasn't really depressed and that he blamed himself for people identifying as being depressed when they weren't or some shit. He still promised to deliver the books though.
About a year and a half later in 2014, he had only shipped about 75% of them. Apparently, he had underestimated the cost of the whole affair (the books were all hardcover and each was shipped with a dead wasp for some fucking reason), and had run out of money to send the damn things. In response, he posted a video update saying the books weren't coming and showed himself burning about a hundred of them in a dumpster.
A little after that, he shut the whole website down and started telling everyone he didn't want his work online anymore and to stop sharing it.
After that, he drew some shit for Birdman.
him being one of the earliest self-deprecating webcomics out there is great
him also actually being fucked in the head really solidifies him as not a hack unlike the dozens of ones you see shared around
pretty ironic all these other ones profit off what he hates
maybe he wasn't actually depressed but he was fucked in the head

He was almost certainly actually depressed; the 'faking being depressed' post read exactly like one of his weird jokes, and I don't believe his list was anything but a fuck you to the people getting on him for 'faking'

No he's not okay, he went berserk after acting like he didn't understand why his career in "art" didn't go so good. Look I love the comic and all that but there's a point where you have to grow out of the theatrics and commit to a workable lifestyle. I'm sorry, it sounds cruel but it's just what I have to tell myself in order to move forward.

his art career didn't even fail
he had a successful kickstarter, and would probably have an extremely successful patreon lifestyle if he was still around. Could have literally been paid to live and breath
ironically everything he said and wanted came true
-people making a profit off faking being depressed
-their content making people think they're depressed
-getting paid to live
if only he waited, though him actually being crazy is what makes his art more honest

Yeah he could have done great if he wasn't such a short-term thinker. I feel for the guy, seriously, but he hit his first real hurdle and absolutely blew up, felt the need to post himself burning his own assets he promised to deliver. I wish I knew how the guy was doing now, because he obviously wanted more than cash from his internet career.

Wow, this is really old drama. Was pic related the extent of the fight or did it go deeper?
I just want to take this chance to point out that denying that true depression exists is a means of coping with true depression.

iirc he made a couple of strips where he called out that her history knowledge was wrong and unfunny. But I remember reading that it was fake and they did it for publicity and shit.
>>92988302
Yes.
When he went crazy and started burning copies of his books that he'd promised to deliver.
Probably not.
