PUNISHER STORYTIMEOF PAIN
THIS IS THE ONE WHERE HE TURNS BLACK
All this year I'll be storytiming Punisher comics, with at least one story per week. Most of the stuff I'll be posting will be pre-Ennis issues, but expect a few from the Ennis era and maybe a few from after that.
This week's big storytime... well... THIS is a fucking doozy.
Today we read the infamous -- and I do mean INFAMOUS, as in you've probably heard of this before -- The Final Days of The Punisher.
Which... is... where... yeah, it's the one where he fucking gets plastic surgery to turn black.
No, I'm not making that up (as much as I wish I was).
How does that happen, you ask? WHY THE LIVING FUCK does that happen? Well, actually that's probably the best thing about this story. Believe it or not, this actually starts off with a pretty strong premise! It's just where they go with it after that takes this into "WHO GREENLIGHTED THIS SHIT?" territory. So read it and find out!
And I did mean it when I said "big" earlier. This bad boy is 10 fucking issues long! So the suffering will be drawn out as long as possible! Oddly, only the first 7 issues are labeled as part of the "official" story arc, but the next 3 are inarguably part of it. It even continues directly into them when no pause in between. So I'll be posting all 10 issues. So if it wasn't obvious DO NOT POST IMAGES IN THIS THREAD UNTIL THE STORYTIME IS OVER BECAUSE WE ARE GOING TO GO CLOSE TO IMAGE LIMIT JUST FROM THE STORYTIME ALONE.
Also, BUMP IF YOU'RE READING BECAUSE IF I HAVE TO TAKE A BREAK EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE TO BUMP THE THREAD MYSELF THEN THIS'LL TAKE EVEN LONGER THAN NECESSARY.
With all that out of the way, let's get right into it.
This is...
THE FINAL DAYS OF THE PUNISHER

This is one of the best Punisher covers EVER! There were 2 covers: A standard style one with a photo of a guy dressed as The Punisher and another wraparound "wanted poster" that went over that. An absolute classic!
>>92980782
And here's the photo cover.
They really need to bring photo covers back. The wedding cake one from The Punisher (I think it was War Journal) alone justifies the entire concept.

Also of note is that this story marks the end of the Mike Baron run on the series. He also had a run on War Journal (which I'll be posting later this month) that ended around the same time (and which is EXCELLENT and features some top notch art), but this was it for his tenure as the head writer on this book. He would also return for a single issue on the main title about a year later plus a miniseries or two.

>>92988945
Political correctness can actually also refer to the idea of not using 'inappropriate' language but not changing their actual beliefs.
For example: when you call a black person shot by police a "thug" instead of a "nigger" you offer basically the same racist sentiment implying they deserved it for being black, but the language makes it more 'acceptable', or 'politically correct'.
That's actually what 'political correctness' used to mean (so it's very likely this is what this could've meant in the 1980's), but conservatives just turned it into 'those darn liberals being nice to minorities'.

Political correctness used to come from communists, as in, these are incorrect political beliefs that will get you sent to the gulag.
And note that the political prefix is there to separate it from the other kinds or correct, say the mike brown case, where the black man in question is caught on camera strong arm robbing a convenience store clerk for fucking gas station cigars. Calling him a thug is politically incorrect, but may be factually correct.

OP, have you ever heard the podcast Frank Discussions? The host seems to really know her shit regarding the character, which is pretty refreshing in an age where most comic podcasts are just mindless fanboy circlejerks.
Some of her guests are kind of retarded though. One episode, I think it was the one about this comic actually, just turned into the guest ranting about SJW shit for like 45 minutes.

Nothing was really fundamentally wrong with this comic until this point. The last two issues might have been comparatively unexciting, but they were never bad. And at least the first three issues were pretty strong, maybe even the fourth if only for the knife fight scene.
But this issue... This issue is where everything falls apart. And when it gets bad it gets REALLY bad. These last four issues are basically in that "so bad that it's embarrassing to read" territory. Just a fucking MESS of an ending to an otherwise promising arc.
Though I WILL admit that this issue has its moments. The other three... I can't really find much that's very positive to say about any of them off the top of my head.

Microchip wanted "Tank FIGHT".
But, yeah, it is consistent with the convention of giving games different names on different continents.
>>92982527
>melanin
oh boy here we go...
>>92982612
this is going to end poorly
>>92982768
fuck this is fucking retarded
>>92982768
Was this the dumbest fucking single page in all of 90s Marvel?
>>92982768
This is amazing.
>>92982799
>more politically incorrect as fuck shit
THIS is what we need more of in comics.
>>92982836
This has to be one of the most notorious covers ever.
>>92982906
FUCK! THAT! BITCH! FRANK!
>>92983127
wow did luke cage just kill a cop?
>>92983512
this is just so fucking stupid
Imagine black Frank calling Micro out on muh Israel.
That's political incorrect.
>>92983702
OH SHI-
>>92983762
This is THE most redpilled page in Marvel's entire history. This would NEVER get published now.
>>92984701
Thank you very much, anon. I used to never get into comic books, especially not the Punisher since I considered him to be just a one-trick pony, but this run that you've been posting has given me a new-found appreciate for the medium and the character.
>>92984157
>Kevin Duncan's letter about Daredevil
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!
>>93003564
No problem.
>>92984178
>Quesada cover
Oh wow.
That's actually a somewhat cool cover, too.
>>92984362
Is that that bitch?
I don't fucking get it. Why not just have Frank team up with Luke for a couple issues to promote his new series? Why does he get plastic surgery to make him black?
>>92984701
Well that was...
huh...
Those last few issues were pretty fucking retarded. And not just in terms of the concept. Even just the scripts were lacking. Overall just TERRIBLE comics. Though I did like the earlier issues.
>>93004503
Because 90s.
>>92982865
Yeah, they're legitimately bad comics. Just ill-advised all-around.
>>92984977
No problem.
>>92985143
No problem.

.....all I'm going to say is I'm glad they gotturning Frank blackout of their system in the 90s rather than doing it to him along with every other superhero now adays
>>92979475
>Justice League of Vigilantes
This is what that was referring to. It was a thing that was brought up in the letters pages before. I think there might have even been a reference to it before this, but I don't know for sure.
>>92984157
>>93007364
hmm... I wonder what Kevin's up to now adays...
>>92980289
>where can I get a shiv*
>*makeshift knife
yes thank you editor
>>93006984
But iron man. Since they already did black, here, and black with nigel, and at least two fempunisher, clearly the thing is to make him black AND a woman.female barracuda punisher when?
>>92981286
>one of the only times Frank's ever cried and it's when he has to put his dog down
I know that feel
>>92980864
ah the simple days, when Franks kill count was only three figures
>>92982321
>they didn't tell me you were a head case
>they didn't tell me you were a hooker on junk
fucking rekt
>>93008099
>female barracuda
my first thought was Kimura from X-23, she's even a bit gay-rapey
>>92983207
>cat
I like how Frank even starts speaking black too.
>>92983404
>farshlngrbstfrkn
And a bixnood mufugga to you too sir.
>>92984562
that's for Max you nip bastard
>>92984465
>big guy
bumping for others
>>93009141
That's what too much melanin in the brain does to you.
Thanks anon!
This takes me back. I was buying these issues at the drug store down the street during my peak Punisher fandom. ... Good times.
Thanks again
>>93008887
Kimura vs Frank I think would be a good matchup.
>>93013029
That actually happened once.
>>93013978
did he just snap her fucking neck? after only interacting with her for one page?
I guess that is one way to kill someone with impenetrable skin
>>93014036
He just threw her off him.
He does throw her into the Predator X a few pages later, though.
>>92980428
Love the paneling
>>93014164
that raises even more questions
>>93015057
Here's the mini-comic https://www.mediafire.com/folder/3jt09uriioeq3/Astonishing_Tales

>that pose in the top panel
>frank literally fires a load into her cleavage
hmmm
>>93012985
No problem.
>>93008422
I love how much banter there was in the old Punisher comics, in Baron's run in particular.
bumping to read
>>92982768
>>92983066
>>92983097
Can you imagine the /pol/ outrage if this was released today? And the SJW outrage when Frank went back to normal?
But when we were kids, it was just another story.
>>93007222
Who would be on this team?
I figure you could have The Punisher, Shotgun, Foolkiller III, Night Raven, Nomad, Silver Sable, Domino, Gunmetal Gray, and if you wanna include wannabe Punishers then you could have Lynn Michaels, Outlaw, Payback, and maybe Hitman (Marvel, not DC). Americop is also debatable. I'm tempted to say maybe The Scourge of the Underworld? Microchip of course would be the team intel/tech guy. You could have Punisher 2099 involved if you wanted to have him travel back in time to the present.
>>93020594
Solo could MAYBE be on there as well.
>>92978554
>microchip wont tell me who his agent is
kek, I like that Micro is still an ordinary person who wants to be doing more with his life and has to hide things from Frank, like that time he went to a psychologist and Frank threatens to kill him like some fucked up abusive marriage
There was another Punisher/Cage team-up that came out like a couple months after this. I might post it later in the week if I can be bothered.
thanks OP
>>93028175
No problem.
