Is it possible to make an animated horror series? Or is the fact that it's a cartoon be a detriment to the scare factor?

The real Ghostbusters was pretty scary.
But I think Horror is more like a movie genre. How do you make series if the characters die all the time?
American Horror Story and penny dreadful are rare examples for live action horror shows. Cartoons - usually aimed at kids - have a harder time to be scary.
I always thought a horror anthology cartoon series would be great.
You really have to do some trippy shit with the audience for it to work though. Dilworth knew what he was doing on Courage by throwing in early CG into his 2D show.
When they had the balls to do it, it can be very unnerving.

It existed for a short bit in the late 1990s

There was also Tales from the Cryptkeeper

gruesome tales for grizzly kids, the animation wasn't that great however, used to show on ITV in the 90s, repeated loads in the 00s, based off a book series, reused animation loads, cheap, one voice actor playing everyone, etc, etc
wasn't great but was fun
I wish the animation industry would explore more genres.

No. Especially when /co/ considers this shit >>92943709

This. Some of the designs still unnerve me to this day.

studio executives make the decisions, its all money, money to these types

Extreme Ghostbusters, some episodes, the ghost vampire clowns, the hellraiser parody, the wish ghost, eye stealer, etc
>>92944250
what do you consider horror, big boy?
>>92944455
Not a show about a fucking dog and two old people, for one. Courage isn't fucking horror, it's faux-horror, and I hate when people tout it as some champion of horror animation.
>>92944639
Explained it for me.

Go make another thread about how traumatized you were that time you watched an episode of spongebob.
Where the Dead Go to Die

Gregory horror show is a pretty good horror animation.
I think the problem with the genre is that cartoons are still primarily made for children and cartoons for adults tend to be Family Guy or South Park ripoffs.

Something you're not going to ever find from a fucking cartoon on nickelodeon or cartoon network.

Alright, we get it. Mister big boy pants McSameFagonly appreciates true, deep horror experiences like Dead Space or Saw 5.
>>92944795
Yeah, and you get traumatized by kiddy cartoons.

Post some.

>waaah, that claymation girl with the violin scared me and now people are making fun of me! :(
Get cancer, Redditor.

He's probably talking about the g-rated designs of the cenobites they used.
Yes.

Horror cartoons aren't usually marketed as horror cartoons. Mighty Max, The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest and 90s Spiderman were horror cartoons but they weren't marketed as such.
