I've been rewatching Inspector Gadget and man, I'd forgetten how great the music is. While everyone remembers the intro theme, I now believe Penny's theme (and in particular the "Look Out" variation) to be possibly the pinnacle of /mu/co/.

But it did work, and it worked really well.

The show was really the adventures of girl detective and secret agent Penny, who the kids watching would identify with more with and root for. Gadget was both wacky comic relief and the adult who took all the credit for Penny's work and thought he was competent while the audience knew he wasn't.

Penny is likeable because she's competent while remaining humble and Gadget is likeable because while he's stupid he means well. A competent Gadget or Penny who does the job and gets the credit they deserve wouldn't be half as entertaining.

Because they had to literally pull a show out of their ass. Originally the company was making a sequel to Lupin III (called and I shit you not Lupin VIII set in space) and the license got pulled at the last minute so they had to suddenly create a new show out of nowhere in literal weeks.

So they smashed Clouseau and Smart together and made every episode exactly the same and somehow it fucking worked and they managed to not totally waste the money.

But yeah, Lupin is the reason Gadget exists and they managed to put out something kids enjoyed despite having like no fucking time to do it.

Maybe Gadget was actually an incredibly competent super-spy. His enemies realized how big a threat he posed and tried to take care of him, resulting in gruesome injuries leading to his cyberization. After getting all gadgeted up he realized he couldn't keep in the game.

He puts on an act of being an idiot, seemingly a result of the new robot body and new brain. This serves both to keep the heat off and as a way to train his successor, Penny. Gadget lets Penny do the important shit while pretending to bumble around, all the meanwhile preparing to jump in and save her if things go wrong.

Dr. Claw is the only one smart/crazy enough to see through Gadget's cunning ruse.
