He has a very good eye for visuals and excels at making simple, self-contained films which are light on narrative but very visually impressive.

This is apart from Dawn of the Dead, which I think sucks and looks like shit but everyone else seems to love it so what do I know.

Some directors write the story(like with Joss Whedon, James, Gunn, Christopher Nolan), some take a complete hands off approach(random studio directors), and some are heavily involved in the process with the writers(Russo brothers with their Captain America films).

This. So much this. I mean, the guy has a great eye, I'd buy some photos if he were a photographer, but when he goes with his gut for storytelling, his gut's always wrong. Now if he improved, that'd be better. But he didn't. In fact, he got worse in Batman v. Superman. Now he has to reinvent the entire tone of this universe that he mad an unfortunate mistep when he could have salvaged it.

Thing about Snyder is much like George Lucas, he needs to be reigned in by other people in order to do good work. People who will guide him away from his impulses while making a film. When Lucas had this you got the original Trilogy, when he didn't have this you got the prequels.

Frankly i would take Zack Snyder any day of the week over directors like Paul W.S. Anderson, or Olivier Megaton. I honestly don't know how people can call Zack Snyder one of the worst directors when people who shoot scenes like this one:

He makes simplistic and shallow choices and then commits, which is why his films only work on a surface, ie visual, level, and can look impressive.

There's no meat to it however, which is why discussions of his work fall apart once, for example, everyone agrees that yes, that is a christ allegory.

I can't appreciate his visuals for 2 reasons. I think his color pallette is lacking. It makes the image look uglier to me, regardless of how it's framed. I also think a good amount of his visuals come at the déterminent of character and story. I can take a badly written story with good visuals, but not when the story has to suffer to set up the visuals.

Most people that I've met the like the movies act like he's a super genius intellectual and the stories are just too deep and smart for the masses.

Total opposite for me, honestly. The action in Dawn of Justice was a massive letdown for me and a huge step down from Man of Steel.

I love the guy to death but it took me several rewatches just to gain appreciation for the Doomsday battle.

I just hope he kicked back into high gear for Justice League because so far it's Man of Steel, Sucker Punch and 300 that have his best action scenes. Possibly Wonder Woman.

Seriously, i get not liking the movies for the tone, the destruction porn, the bad acting, the way it handled some things, but saying shit like that makes no sense.

Can't blame the guy for taking a job that WB gave him. But I think we can blame him for being incredibly ignorant in taking criticism for his portrayal of Superman. He keeps doubling down on his adaptation, even though it's clearly not a very well received portrayal or one that makes much sense.
