For some reason a lot of main characters who are kinda naive and stick to a code of honor or live by the principles of being a hero always have trouble getting the girl, or they get her and then lose her

Finn, Star, Jack, all of them just a bit dumb and delusional protagonists who were doing their job or sometimes just trying to have fun but the rules of storytelling don't seem to like them being happy even less finding love

No idea. Some time in the flame princess arc they just decided he should stop growing and never be with anyone. Which is be happy to have a show with no relatio ship bullshit but Finn tries to find someone and they keep the relation ship shit out by shitting on him constantly.

And it makes sense for Finn to want someone. He's literally the last of his race, he's going to feel lonely and out of place. A relationship with a girl would go a long way to alleviating that.

But they have Finn desire and go after relationships and just deny him. Either give the protagonist what he wants or stop making him want it. The show is coming to a close soon anyway and at this point it really feels like the writers get off on making Finn fail.

The buildup with FP wasn't even properly done.

They had a nice setup with her as a semi-antagonist who could slowly warm up to him. But in her very next appearance they were already chillin and that left a lot of people cold. The whole arc was just lukewarm after that until it crashed and burned.

Then there's the poor woman who they got to make a Finn/FP graphic novel filling in the gaps which got announced around the time they broke up.
