Jack found the Guardian portal in his time and used it to bring Ashi from another timeline. King Jack is still canon.

Weird that a handful of people think Jack would become some angsty Ashi obsessed maniac after her disappearance. It's like you totally lost the point of the ending. He loved the girl then lost the girl, and now has to find joy in this life he's always wanted, so her sacrifice wasn't for nothing. THIS is what they fought for, this wonderful, beautiful world, not to be together. She can't come back, but she and what she did will always be very important to Jack, even when he finds another love.

That part was fine, the show handled it fine. I loved Ashi in the show, I liked their relationship, and I thought the ending was weirdly handled and got kind of cliche at times but overall it worked. His small smile at the very end shows he will try not to be sad that he lost Ashi, but be happy that they SAVED THE ENTIRE WORLD together. Together they achieved everything he, Ashi, and all the innocents of the future wanted Jack to do. That sacrifice won't be taken for granted by the samurai. The idea that he'd never be able to enjoy his home or his present again, and would go on to be a sad Jack again or that obsessing over Ashi being the rest of his life is hilariously off. He wouldn't go back to being an angsty, edgy soul that would throw themselves off a cliff in front of God, even MORE depressed than he was from failing to save billions of people and the planet he lived on for 50 years. He will find joy in the land he'd always wanted to return to. He is a resilient young man who will deal with his grief in a healthy way, and he'll eventually find joy, and love, again. He will remember her sadly, but fondly.

Season 5 was a great continuation of Samurai Jack and had everything the fans loved about the original run.
The pacing was good, you could really feel the weight of each situation, and adding another main character was a stroke of genius.
The finale was handled perfectly, what happened was what we knew was going to happen, but the chain of events causing it, and the execution of it, were absolutely brilliant. Not to mention that masterfully executed ending is sure to touch your heart and leave you thinking.

As for the tests of faith and loyalty, episode 9; as much as i HATE to acknowledge it because of the Human Puppet trope near the end, had Ashi be revealed as Aku's literal daughter and Jack was shown unable to hurt her due to his love for her. The finale actually used that love to free her (called it btw) and she was able to overcome Aku's influence. Tests like that can strengthen a romance but overdoing it actually ruins the pacing.
