The cast recording for Anastasia, based on Don Bluth's film (and the '56 film that the Bluth cartoon was based on) is available for streaming for a few days.
No, Rasputin is not in the show, all supernatural elements are removed. No, In the Dark of the Night isn't there. But listen to "Stay I Pray You" to see how they paid homage to it. (It's also used in the stage show instrumentals a few times).

>No, Rasputin is not in the show
Then what the heck is the point?

Communism.

removing Rasputin actually removes a little of the oddness of doing a musical of the Romanov massacre...slightly
The musical's up for a Lead Actress Tony and a Costume Design Tony, think it has a chance to win?
If there's no Rasputin, what's the conflict?

Not lead actress, supporting actress. Or featured actress? I'm too lazy to look up the specific term.
I think it has a chance for Costume Design (the costumes are fucking gorgeous and detailed as all get) but not sure about featured.

A communist officialwho happens to be the son of one of the Romanov executionersis tasked with hunting Anya down. If she is Anastasia, he is to finish the job and kill her. If she's not, he's meant to bring her back to Russia so they can make an example of her and re-educate her.

>Rasputin is not in the show

the story is now more like the Ingrid Bergman film in tone but with (mostly) good music. And a definitive "she really is Anastasia" rather than it being up in the air. Based on what I've read about the Don Bluth cartoon production, it's honestly closer to what they would have done if the studio didn't want a cartoonish villain and magic.

>bondastardly bug-magic man with a cool glowing tube of evil
We'll fuck this, mind as well go watch Dr. Zhivago
>>92700278
to tell the story without forced supernatural characters and demonic magic, I'd imagine
