Underrated villains thread.

Just rewatched "Road To El Dorado," and I forgot how good of a villain this guy was. I liked how fanatical he was, yet also really observant and manipulative. He really had an aura of uncomfortableness to him.

I think the strongest selling point of that movie was how well the characters were written and developed
Tzekel-Kan was no exception, and being the villain gave him an edge in that regard, with the dark sense of humor and all around dickish personality
also he did nothing wrong

Calling out a cruel and inhumane cultural practice is not racist. I've read from multiple different actual native-born sources that one thing that is often not missed is the medicine man, or priests of the old religions. A lot of people seemed to live in fear of them.

I like that he was a religious fanatic, but he wasn't stupid. There's a neat moment in the middle of the movie where Tulio tells Miguel they need to leave immediately because he can already tell that Tzekel-Kahn could be a major problem.

>Miguel

Tulio is the one that wanted to fuck Chel.
>>
>>92686483
You're mixing them up. Tulio was the one who lusted for Chel, but he also wanted to leave the city. Miguel liked the city and its people and wished to stay there. Tzekel-Kan was the one who unleashed the golem on the city because he was crazy and wanted to see blood.
>>
>>92686483
It was the other way around, though. Tulio was the one fucking Chel, and he was the one telling Miguel they needed to go, and he had Chel ready to leave with them. Miguel was the one who wanted to stay, which is why they were there long enough for the panther thing to happen.

If anything, it was Miguel's fault for going out in public when Tulio told him not to, because that led to the sports game that made Tzekel-Kahn realize that they bleed. Tulio was content with taking gold and fucking Chel, and she wanted to leave too.

well there's a reason we don't really list him among national heros in Spain
The whole genocide thing kinda gives him bad press
>>
>>92687023

Wasn't he somewhat fair toward the natives by trying to avoid unecessary bloodshed and trading with natives, instead of using violence every time to get what he wanted, even almost hanging some of his own soldiers for stealing from them? Also it was Pedro de Alvarado who commited most of the atrocities without his approval. Cortes did slaughter one city, but he was forced to do this because Natives were planning an ambush to kill him and his men, and even then he forbid his soldiers from killing women and children

I appreciate the fact that his major villainous role wasn't that he was an effective or powerful leader (considering all the men under his "command" hated his ass) but that he was the catalyst for the hatred between the indians and the colonists. It says something that his own villain song is kind of lacking, but the song where he gets to expound about how much he hates the indians is fucking bombastic and awesome.

>I think the strongest selling point of that movie was how well the characters were written and developed

My second favorite aspect of the film's storytelling (besides the protagonists' perfect relationship and interactions) is how the city's two leaders - the fanatic priest and the paternal chieftain - are both extremely competent, see through the "gods" deception, and take advantage of it for their own ends. Each of them represent two conflicting aspects of their culture - blood and violence vs. community and celebration. The priest looks for excuses to make sacrifices and reinforce his position of power, whereas the chief finds excuses to make joyful festivals to counteract him.

There's a scene on the boat where the chief heavily implies to Miguel he knows the truth. He used the "gods" to make his people happier.

It's an amazingly well written movie, especially considering how much crap Dreamworks would go on to make after they switched to 3D (though KFP and HtTYD are good).

He had a cut subplot about being captured and chained up by the Queens goons, breaking out, escaping, and finding his way to the now sleeping Snow White.
They removed it cause they were on thin ice with the budget and thought it wasnt absolutely necessary to continue animating his scenes. Ironically setting the pattern for the Prince characters to be minor roles that pop up in the first scene and then not again till the last to save the day.

There is a shocking amount of cut Snow White content, I know the dwarves had at least two more songs.

It is Brutus. Who I can't recall but I think actually died in the original book, but wasn't a villain in the movie, just a guard. They say his name while trying to save the Brisby kids from sinking but it is ambiguous if he's actually shown apart from that scene

He appears in the sequel but the less said about that the better

Not if you knew about how many prostitutes the guy went through.

As I recall, he had a very strange personal faith which involved one having to seek penance for their sins.

For him, this took the form of getting blind drunk, hiring a prostitute for the night, boning her silly, then praying for mercy and having himself whipped.

There was a reason why they called him the Mad Monk.

I really like the idea of a criminal lord with odd habits like keeping birds around, trapping captives in cages or eating rats alive. His hunger for power is balanced pretty well by his resemblance of principle to not make him look trite. It's a shame so few writers are willing to work with such a corny yet fun premise. I think the only ones who truly did something with the Owl were
- Chichester (and the techno upgrade with 180 degree head turns was just batshit insane just like all of his run)
- Millar (was pretty good in MK: Spider-Man)
- Bendis (lost in a very anti-climatic way plus was kinda edgy)
- Waid (pic related, had great potential but at the end was simply used as a plot device)
- Spencer (SFoSM possibly had the best incarnation yet)

something to remember is that while Snow White isn't the first feature length animated film, it was the first one made in America, so it was under a ton of pressure to succeed, indeed until it came out many in the industry referred to it as "Walt's Folly" believing that it would lead to financial ruin for Disney

heck there's a hilarious little anecdote where after showing a partially completed version of the film to everyone at the studio, Walt left a suggestion box out for possible improvements, one anonymous jackass left a note that said simply "Stick To Shorts"(in reference to the cartoon shorts that were Disney's main revenue at the time), for years afterwards whenever someone suggested Disney not go ahead with a project he berate them by saying "I bet you're the guy who said Stick To Shorts"

KFP 1 and 2, despite the goofy title and premise, are genuine wuxia films at heart. This is why they were so unexpectedly good; people were expecting Dreamwork's usual brand of ironic jokey bullshit, and instead they got awesome kung fu shit. KFP 3, on the other hand, is much more what you'd expect from dreamworks. They toned the drama down and cranked the comedy way up, which is a shame because the KFP movies weren't that funny. On top of that the story just isn't that good. Kai is a seriously underwhelming villain after the last two, he's barely built up at all.

It's not horrendous or anything, which is why people don't talk about it. It was just your standard dreamworks mediocrity- only just competent enough to not leave any kind of impression, good or bad.

This movie was really technically impressive for the time, which is a shame because they wasted it by realistically painting every single thing the same fucking shade of dirt brown. A Bug's Life looked a bit less technically impressive I thought, but it looked way fucking nicer because the movie wasn't about dirt colored ants crawling around in dirt tunnels for an hour.

Also General Mandible is an absolute shit compared to Hopper.

I mean, most people consider people who poach gorillas and chimps to be absolute monsters, and gorillas and chimps are way dumber then those chickens were.

I don't think there was a book version. ..Was there a book? I don't think it was based on a chapter book, I thought it was the stretched plot of a children's picture book, like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. I haven't seen the book that goes with We're Back or even sure it exists, but I think I may have heard something about it involving dinosaurs crashing the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade before going to a museum and that's it. No lovable child runaways and no screw eyed circus ringmasters.

Also considering Prof. Screweye's backstory, I wouldn't be surprised if he chose to have a screw shoved in there over a prosthetic. Maybe he chose it to symbolize how the world screwed him over.

The creator went on to describe what he is years ago.

>He wasn't really True-Eye's brother in any biological sense.
>He wasn't even human.

He was a tulpa. Though he raves about losing an eye truth is... He was just there one day. Created without said eye. His twisted mind may -think- he had some tragic past but he was True-Eye's Dark Side made into flesh. Completely inspired by the character George Stark from the Dark Half.

Once True-Eye comes to terms and frees himself there is no longer a reason for the tulpa to exist and Screw Eye evaporates.

Reminder that on first seeing human sacrifice Cortez did the exact same thing as Tulio and Miguel and put a stop to it using his position as assumed God.

He also managed to introduce Christianity with more ease than you'd think. Since ritual cannibalism was rife to gain the victims power, the idea of communion "eat this bread for it is my flesh, drink this wine for it is my blood" was an instant hit. What cannibal wouldn't want to consume the body of a willing God and gain his power?

It's a surprisingly good movie, actually. Cinderella, the prince, the king, and the stepsister Anastasia all get a lot of character building which works out great. The prince is an especially fun character in it. And it shows Cinderella really personally actively fight and earn her happy ending, which feels very satisfying, especially for people who had any problems with the original. It's one of Disney's better sequels. Miles better than the second movie at least.
