>made over a billion dollars
>Won an academy award
>Barely an merchandise or tie in material before, during or after it's release
What the fuck is wrong with Disney?
>>92632347
They wanted to make a film that told a story and developed characters rather than a commercial to sell merchandise?
If you want the latter, go watch Frozen.
>>92632347
they knew how much we wanted it.
Actually they probably thought it would flop
>>92632347
these are the same people who screwed Wander Over Yonder. no merchandise and not putting the show on XD was a death sentence
>>92632358
>They wanted to make a film that told a story and developed characters rather than a commercial to sell merchandise?
>Disney
>Doing it for the art
>>92632347
they probably did not anticipate that it would be a big hit
at least we got a carrot sound recorder pen
>>92632387
*putting the show on XD was a death sentence
it's hard to type with tears in my eyes
>>92632347
did you forgot how that movie was made?
"let's make apartheid with furries, this will teach these evil racist whites!" "oh no, pixar told us it was bad it, deadline soon!"
Blame this, they pulled bigger dodge than kingdom of the sun/emperor's new groove. Just be glad Disney allowed them to finish it.
ps. Academy awards are a joke, DONT FORGET THAT.
>>92632516
*pixar told us it was bad idea
Who do you think will be the main purchaser of Judy plushies, and Nick face masks?
Disney didn't want to create a furry exodus, they are preventing that timeline.
>>92632516
>pol manbaby
Disregarded
>>92632347
Little to no merchandise because it's not a Disney princess movie. Have you seen the shitload of merch those movies get?
>>92632347
>Little to no merchandise
It may not have Frozen levels of merchandie but holy crap are you blind or willingly ignorant?
>>92632347
all I care about are Judy plush toys and Nick and Judy figurines
>>92632610
He just wants something more sophisticated, like fox plushie with SPH to fuck.
I think the real issue here is:
>Disney makes billions of dollars from Star Wars, MCU, and their own films and remakes
>Literally the richest company in America
>"Sorry, but Disney Infinity is simply too expensive to continue production."
>>92632549
>Prevent furry anything
>Disney
They basically created furrydom.

It's not that it's expensive, it's that it's not making money.

Or he's just moving the goalposts so he can pretend he's enjoying the "underdog" movie.

>Ok it didn't bomb, but it won't make a lot and won't be popular!
>Alright so it got Infinity figures and shit, but it still won't make a lot of money!

>a film that makes money because it's a good film not just a toy commercial for itself
Like films used to do. Way lower investment.
>>92632718
Disney is not the richest company in America
>>92632398
that's Pixar's job now.
Disney makes movies.
Pixar does toy commercials.
>>92632347
There was merch, it was all exclusive to Target. I had to keep stocking the damn things since I work overnight.
>>92632881
>>92632610
All I've ever seen from browsing countless Disney stores, toy stores and places like Walmart are Nick and Judy plushes. Those Infinity things exist and that cheaply printed comic was a thing but other then that nothing. All I'm asking for is an adultmedium sizedZPD sweatshirt in the vain of those NYPD or FDNY sweatshirts or something similar. Is that too much to ask
>>92632358
>if you want the latter go watch Frozen
Disney thought Frozen was going to tank and never produced any merchandise. That's why the merch you see has the same faces over and over and over because as soon as they realized they made a cash cow they had to shit out as much product as possible but only had material from promo posters to work with.
>>92632914
>Zootopia is the next Lion King!
>Moana is the next Pocahontas!
yeah right, that priviledge belongs to Frozen, both were insanely popular and are going to be mined for decades to come.
sequel in two years , dont forget!
>It's a /co/ tries to divine corporate plans based on pure speculation thread
>>92633192
pretty much, they plan such things years in advance, currently they're focused on Cars 3 and Coco, then we'll ge merchandise related to Wreck it Ralph 2. then Frozen 2, I'd rather wait for the Zootopia sequel, then they'll go with toys full force.
Will Disney get it dismissed?

>>92633407
Lmao Asshole Hyena fits Nick better than Smug fox
>>92633407
Zootopia was publicly announced years ago and been in development since. Where were the lawsuits back then? Sounds suspicious as hell.
Sudden accusations of plagiarism, that just so happen to show up after the movie has become a huge success, are nothing new. Happened to Kung Fu Panda as well, and that case was even more ridiculous than this.
>>92633504
It raises red flags for me as well. There was a pretty big window of opportunity for a lawsuit long ago, and all of a sudden this guy tries to claim Disney ripped him off once the movie proved itself to be a big success?
Smells like an attempt to get a slice of profit pie.
>>92633504
Oh shit, wasn't the Kung Fu Panda one about a guy trying to say that DW stole his ideas but it turned out he traced it all from a coloring book?
>>92633587
Disney could just pay him off and not face any repercussions for doing so.
>>92633820
But it still raises questions; why did he opt to voice his complaints -now-, after the movie proved to be a financial success? If he was truly behind the original concept he could've threatened with a lawsuit while the movie was still in production phase.
When someone hops onto the "lawsuit bandwagon" long after something made money, it usually indicates that the person involved is a scammer only interested in trying to get rich quick by riding off of that thing's popularity.
Hell, I can draw slightly different redesigns of Disney characters too, and then say Disney ripped me off!
>>92633820
Would you pay money to someone who claims you ripped them off when you never did such a thing nor have you ever met that person before? I know I wouldn't.
>>92633933
If I were endlessly rich and it shut him up, sure.
Keyword: Endlessly
>>92633959
Then you're a dumbass.
Because if you relent to one such con man, the word would spread around and then everyone and their grandmother would claim you stole ideas from them and demand "monetary compensation".
>>92632347
Good. Merch cheapens movies and shows.
>>92634003
>le slippery slope XD
>>92632347
They realize that a good amount of their success came as a result of legitimate furries repeatedly attending the films, grown men wanting to fuck the rabbit, and a Sanic tier fanbase pumping out porn around the clock. They don't want that associated with their image so they're probably going to let the hype die down and play a slow hand with the franchise if they choose to expand it. The family friendly branding of Disney comes first and foremost.

Because Lion King vs Pocahontas repeated itself.
Disney did not have much faith in Zootopia, so they kinda laid low on the advertising / merchandise, while more focus was put on Moana.
and then Zootopia ends up blowing Moana out of the fucking water.

>>92634329
Not just Moana, but Frozen as well. That's what I call "killing two birds with one stone".
>>92634329
The difference being while Moana didn't make mega-bucks like Zootopia did, it was still much better received than Pocahontas.
>>92634494
Did Frozen go through the same thing? I never really paid attention.
People keep comparing Lion King+Pocahontas with Zootopia+Moana because it's so damn similar; both of them are "brown princess movie" VS "talking animals movie".
>>92634494
>>92634329
>>92634527
>>92634533
because it's Frozen that is modern Lion King, an insanely popular movie, and Disney was banking on Big Hero 6 because of the superhero craze.
Zootopia is like Kingdom of the Sun, a movie that was going to be competely different than the one we got.
There's even documentary about it.
>>92634618
Yeah, I remember the original details about Zootopia's early draft. I read somewhere that, besides the darker "prejudice against predators as they wear shock collars" script, there was another initial script which resembled Lethal Weapon films, with Nick being the rebellious cop and Judy being a more law-abiding cop with a family and kids of her own.
>>92634682
first idea was about some Donutsteel bunny Jack Savage.
then they went o africa to see animals in their natural habitat and got an idea "predators = minorities"
>>92634618
And just like Kingdom, the final movie ended up being much better than the original concept.

it wouldn't surprise me the movie was entirely made for pandering furries, you can make a checklist of fetishes that are known to them just by watching it, wouldn't be a stretch they hired furry artist for the artwork and be allowed to make porn till their heart's content.
I like the movie and enjoy it but is being over valuated for a weak plot

Trying thinking for yourself for once champ

>he thinks mothers using media to babysit their kids for them is a new thing
Parents have been doing that shit since television exploded in popularity in the 50's. Hell, parents in the 20's and 30's would often just dump their kids at Saturday cartoon matinees.
The film was stuck in development hell through constant rewrites of the plot so Disney expect to have a bomb, they forgot that normies connect easily to animal characters and furries pay out loads of money for their love of anthro
>>92639178
nah, they knew the movie's since 2013, only in early 2015 they got feedback it was a bad idea to tell it.
the weird thing about this movie it was "reanimated" , when you make a 2d movie you cant use existing footage anymore, thanks to CGI you can completely change scenes using existing models and locations.
>>92639140

>>92639839
i think it's about finding a good story in new setting, and not repeat an existing one.
i had somewhere commentary from vimeo, possibly related.
oh here it is:
>"When we first make our films, they really dont work at all. They are just terrible they are like the worst movie you have ever seen. You have to go through the mistakes and failure. and intellectually people know, that but the failures i think are good are the ones that took place in the past but they dont want to make more in the future and you cant think that way. You have to say im gonna do something and there is a good chance it wont work and since disney animation went through this it became one of the lessons they put in the movie Zoot. They got Judy Hopps in the movie talking about what failure means to her."
>>92640099
Laika needs better writers and marketing. But since it's a passion project of Nike owner's son doubt it's gonna happen. Just be glad they're still making great looking stopmotion movies.

>>92641293
Still more memorable
I can't remember a single tune from Zootopia, but I get Moana songs going through my head occasionally.
And I've only heard them once when I watched the movie.
Thats pretty fucking catchy.
>>92641629
Moana is a musical, ergo more focus on the songs.
Zootopia is NOT a musical, thus no focus on the songs.
Complaining about Zootopia not having as many songs as Moana is like complaining that Social Network didn't have as many fighting scenes as Jet Li's Fearless.
Instead of the endless back and forth over what Zootopia and Moana did better than each other, I've noticed several flaws that are shared between the two.
For starters, I think Disney has serious problems writing male AND female characters. Women are always portrayed as go-getters who are stubborn and naturally talented (Princess and the Frog, Frozen, Zootopia, Moana), extremely acrobatic (Tangled, Zootopia, Moana), and progressive in some way (Moana, Princess and the Frog, Zootopia).
Meanwhile guys are portrayed as shifty and untrustworthy (Zootopia, Tangled, Princess and the Frog, Frozen)
The villains have been pretty awful. Lava spirit(can't be assed to remember her name) and Bellwether are just two sides of the same coin, an antagonistic element introduced at the end of the film, difference is that Bellwether had less foreshadowing. A mindless monster has no menace, the villain of Moana might as well have been Bees.
Finally, Zootopia and Moana both have these pacing issues where the last third of the movie is slowed down by a "separation of the group" gimmick that has been seen countless times before (Maui leaving Moana, Judy going back to Bunny Burroughs)
>>92641998
>Social Network didn't have as many fighting scenes as Jet Li's Fearless.
I mean...
We can't get rid of the Zootopia toys where I work.
>a couple playsets
>action figures
>plushes
Where do you live where the supply is so low or demand so high?
i thought there was going to be a TV show? also there WILL be a sequel, don't worry.
>>92642071
You raised some valid points, but unfortunately I doubt we'll see any changes on these problems because, as far as Disney is concerned, they're part of a winning formula to a succesful movie, at least in the current age.
Same reason why many other movies, namely non-Disney movies, go for the "incompetent dorky guy teams up with tough, skilled woman" formula instead (Rio, Kung Fu Panda, Lego Movie, etc).
If it sells, it stays. When it doesn't sell, then it changes.
So was I supposed to think the prey were minorities, and the predators are whites who are being controlled into letting the minorities do what they want? Because I really did get that impression.
>>92639138
I know what comic that is from, and they should have just shown Mirage with an Aura around her and one panel showing what the illusion looks like.
Secondly, I was once told that they were hedging their bets on Finding Dory being the next big thing. However, Zootopia came outta nowhere and they scrambled like hell to push out merch.
