I believe the concept was that it was a very old hive, and had grown to the point where the aliens were mature enough to start actually thinking about their problems instead of just killing and capturing for the sole purpose of breeding more.
The implication is that the hive was trying to learn more about the humans they took so that they could, like, farm them, or possibly change their own reproductive method, similarly to what happened in Alien: Resurrection.
