I find this humorous.
>>92600596
Fuck me that one hurts a little still.
Any webcomics that got raped to death by Tumblr?
All I can think about is Homestuck.
>>92601021
Olympus Overdrive. I could very easily see it becoming a shit-show, but I still would've loved to see everything play out.
(Or at the very least stir up some solid porn)
As dead as its characters.
>>92600996
Homestuck was the only one where the creator was dumb enough to let tumblr push him around. My MSPA-form comic which is formally beginning on Saturday is hosted on tumblr, only because I wanted an easy place to host it. I kind of want people to read it so I'm posting it in the (oversaturated) tags, but at the same time I can't stand tumblr's community.
Not just dead but almost entirely erased from existence.
>>92600811
>it's no longer a porn comic
It is, but porn is displaced by plot. You can't honestly think them celebrating being on the radio can lead to anything chaste, do you?

I still haven't read the ending of Homestuck. I ollied outie after Karkat had just been knocked out by Kanaya. Is it worth finishing the rest?

>>92601408
for the sake of completion, you might as well. just don't expect a great ending. it's not necessarily bad, it's just highly disappointing given how much wait was needed to get there.
if it weren't for those retarded-long hiatuses Hussie would have managed to maintain most of the fanbase.
51 Hundred shotas. Last update was in October and artist'sTumblrwas last active in February.
I just want my short shorts wearing shotas damn it! And the story probably would've gone homo route too.

that's pretty good but not quite what I imagine Zoophobia would sound like
Did webcomics all go through some kind of holocaust or something?
>>92601190
Every time a webcomic says that, it's pretty much an admission that that's exactly what's happening.
>>92600659
Good riddance. Templar, Arizona was a rambling, pointless piece of shit. I stuck with it for way too long.
>>92601140
Hmmm... It looks very nice, but I have a feeling they take a lot of shortcuts. Maybe it's JUST the face anatomy. No. It's also the shading. It's deceptively simple.
>>92602446
Also this. Never any shortage in webcomics of degenerate filth to attract hordes of people through base instincts.
>>92609094
Don't be ridiculous. Webcomics are merely a reflection of cultures, and as a result they are constantly going through a slow-motion holocaust.
>>92609146
Ten or even five years ago it seemed like there were all kinds of webcomics everywhere and I couldn't go anywhere without tripping on them. Where did they all go?
>>92609183
I slightly suspect Homestuck's three year drawn out death rattle of an ending sort of devastated the whole webcomic scene in the 'salt the earth' kind of way
>>92609094
I think people have just moved on to other media
>>92609094
A lot of webcomics set out as an alternative to more traditional creative outlets like print comics. The problem is that outside of a few notable examples, most webcomics aren't very successful. And a lot of people didn't realize that even though there's less restrictions than traditional media, no editorial oversight, you still have to work on your comic. If you're offering most of the content up for free, you need some kind of incentive for people to pay attention to you, because if they get bored they can just go on to another free thing.
>>92609094
They moved on to hosting websites like Tapastic or Webtoon. If you aren't actively searching for them, you'd miss a lot.
Not a lot of new webcomic creators are putting stuff on their own websites anymore. I'm not sure if they just don't want to pay for bandwidth or something, but something's stopping a good portion of them from putting up on their own host.
>>92606622

>I went back and forth over whether to produce this script. It was originally written as a cliff-hangery epilogue for “Tangled Web”, before deciding to pack it in. There was never any story written for a Morth/Vitani alliance, we just thought that would be fun. Now, with no resolution forthcoming it may seem a bit of a tease, but I liked the implication that Eastwood and crew’s adventures and perils go on. Plus, we get to see Silas one last time.

>>92614022
I can't say I blame her. Speaking as an artist who's had some stupid shit go mildly viral it gets really fucking demoralizing when that's all people associate with you. I mean, of course the attention is fun at first. But there comes a point where you realize it's just a collection of shitty scribbles that you did when you were bored or having a bad day and now it's what defines you to tens of thousands of people. Worse, it will continue to define you to them even years after you've moved onto serious work that you actually put effort into.
Regardless of how good or bad you think CQ is, distancing herself from her old work while she had the chance was the smart thing to do.

>>92601140
I feel like the only reason this was popular was because of the character designs...The format made it a slog to read, the characters weren't particularly likeable, and there wasn't anything very interesting in terms of story. All style, no substance.
>>92615495
>>92615672
It's not that it's bad, it's just mediocre. The art and character designs are great, and it updates fairly regularly, but the characters are bland and the writing isn't very gripping. It's just sort of boring. People around here overexaggerate how bad it is because they don't like the creator. It's a well crafted comic on the surface but below that there isn't a lot going on.

It kept her sane and gave her the space she needed to work on CQ, presumably. The old stuff may still be associated with her, but I'm sure it's better for her that she doesn't have to see it everywhere or constantly deal with entitled fans asking if she's going to do more of it. Deleting everything and publicly disassociating from it serves that purpose.
E-fame isn't the be-all and end-all of what an artist should strive for, either. If you want to see how far prioritizing popular content over everything else gets you, go look at Owlturd.

So did I.
Creators underestimate the effect of neglecting their public works like that - even a short hiatus will lose regular readers and potential donors/patrons.
Happens with YouTube let's players - "not feel like" doing a video every other day/ take a two week rest: watch views drop to half or worse.
The market is super-saturated and the great majority of aspirants will fail, even if they treat the work as a serious business.
Anyway, here's one that at least regular and ended kinda properly:
- Bruno The Bandit; by Ian McDonald, ran 1998 to 2009, then collections printed as books and one card game
I think the apparent mass death of webcomics can be attributed to a couple of things:
1. Modern audiences are not as receptive to original ideas as past audiences were. In the early to mid 2000's the most popular artists on Deviantart were producing artwork that wasn't based on pre-existing properties, not drawing fanart wasn't a hindrance to popularity. Now? You can't get noticed without fanart. Something about popular taste changed.
2. Audiences got tired of being burned. When multiple of the top running webcomics stop updating it can depress the audience's faith in the entire medium. Relatively few webcomics ever conclude. And then how do you attract *new* audiences if the landscape is almost cluttered with unfinished work?
3. Good art takes as long as ever but webcomics were/are hard to monetize and audiences fickle and fleeting. If an artist literally can't afford to take the time to produce the comic without starving of course they are going to stop. And even if they are trust fund kids not having your artistic/emotional efforts validated can be soul crushing and many artists get so discouraged they quit. This just leads back to point 2.
A smart creator uses a webcomic as a portfolio and springboard into paying work that pays the rent and puts food on the table.
4. People are more wedded to a smaller number of websites than ever before. A person in 2017 may only visit facebook, instagram, reddit and pinterest for the entirely of their online needs. In 2007 the average person visited a larger number of smaller websites.
If Patreon had debuted sooner perhaps webcomics would be stronger today.

Yeah, Zack bit more than he could chew with more subplots forced in the new chapters increasing the page count. IMO, some of the ideas for the subplots in there were really great....but they just really got spurted out prematurely. One example:remember that bully character we barely knew for three chapters and saw nothing of his actual bullying as establishment for his character? Guess what - he got possessed by a very dangerous spirit and saw shades by the very goddamn next day!
Years ago, I'd be really enthusiastic if someone had wanted to adapt it to animation (the story flow and art would actually work well with TV anyway)...but now as we go beyond Chapter 4, that dream might as well be like asking for two-parter novel movies to be at least decent with a lot of embellishments added in. I don't really go nuts for it anymore as I used before, I'll just barge in only if the thumbnail stands out enough.
I just wanna see the capped MC and his red headed spectral bro thrash ghost asses together even it is for just one chapter, then I can get on with my life.
>>92629464
good analysis
I posted a bit on >>92630692
and was curious who was writing the small strips in my local free newspaper, found recent interview, bad translation attached (he says comics are easier to read than books, not what google claims)
Note when he asked a bunch of Ticino students who read comics, none replied. Things have changed. Also note the common opinion (in Italy) about Marvel and superhero comics.
>>92629464
I think you're ignoring the real truth of the matter which is simply the impossible glut of above-average artists pumping out more content than anyone could possibly engage with. Do you really think anyone has the time or the drive to just plod through the "recently uploaded" section on DA or tumblr? No. They look up their waifu, or whatever show they're watching, or the latest fad. It's not that people aren't receptive to original content, it's that finding it is extremely challenging and more often than not, unrewarding.
>>92630912
>IMO, some of the ideas for the subplots in there were really great....but they just really got spurted out prematurely.
Yeah, it seems like he doesn't have much of a handle on when and how to incorporate new elements (or when to refrain from doing so). It's too bad, because the setting and basic premise are awesome.
If anything, though, I think the comic would be improved by adaptation to another medium. The unfocused storytelling could be improved with firm editorial guidance, and budgetary constraints would force the plot down to its bare essentials instead of the tangled mess of unfinished subplots we have now.
>>92602141

What happens to the h2o molecules if there is no magnesium?
Why aren't there any webcomics where the author worked on the entire thing for a year or so and then posted the entire finished thing up on a site?
Hellbound, by Eric "Maniac_Wolfman" Nault
>>92629562
No, shit, not this one too
I'm an obscure webcomic artist and I can tell you that the big names in the webcomic community right now are that oversensitive PC crowd. Basically if your comic doesn't star a black lesbian sailor scout you're never going to be noticed.
>>92613113
>Judecca
God, just when it was starting to get really good. I know the author started it as a school project but it's a damn shame they just up and cancelled it because they thought it wasn't good enough.
>>92606857
You mean proto-Oglaf?
Sexy Loserz, White Ninja Comics, Matriculated, Everything Mitch Clem ever touched (Mostly Coffee Achievers), Ornery Boy, Goats, The Abominable Charles Christopher..
At some point I stopped replacing them, now I only read some old comics out of spite.
anyone here read Spindrift? the story was ok but the artwork was really amazing. I think it stopped because the artist had some family issues (sister killed herself or something along those lines). shame...

RPGWorld. I remember a few months ago Ian posted a pic of him drawing the characters again, so it may not be entirely dead.

So I guess everything he's made has always been some kind of banal parody or homage, hasn't it?

I find this comic, smile brush, while looking for cute stickers. It's adorable
Why the fuck are webcomic artists so bad at finishing a story?
It seems like every single time someone starts a story based webcomic they just write a guide of the first act, then after that just write as they go and inevitable keep loosing so much focus that they write themselves into a corner or make so many plot points that they couldn't even dream of wrapping them up, so they just kinda disappear.
can you recommend comics with lizard people?
>>92597951
she's still posting excuses, which is more than you can say for most dead webcomics
speaking of which - the single most angst-inspiring death of them all. would be easier to hate the artist if she wasn't so fucking good.
this and most of the old drunk duck comics.

Scalie Schoolie.
any comics with TF
like shadoweyes?
>>92601418
He got busy with other jobs. But he did well to make a lot of pages for free. He isn't like other webcomic artists who have Olympus Overdrive merchandise or anything
>>92617265
Eh. Sounds like a normal fanart for more exposure dilemma
>>92640217
>most recent update was three months ago
so that's why i haven't seen any of those threads here for a while. what happened?
"Hey, I have a great idea, people love to make sidestories and alt fics right? Well let's make some canonical ones."
"Should we really do that now, while popularity is declining?"
"Yeah, to really rope them in, we'll make all of them about absolutely nothing consequential and have no relevance to the comic, failing to fill in small gaps or do anything productive at all."
>>92638330
literally posted a page a few days ago, but thanks for the rec

I used to read this and her other comic obsessively.

You don't get comments, reader responses/reactions, and in some cases steady income that way
It can be helpful for storytelling if you're doing a serial to get feedback along the way.
>>92641340
try the magnet link in https://www.reddit.com/r/webcomics/comments/1z7men/trying_to_make_a_backup_of_the_former_webcomic/
that worked last time I tested it a few months ago - note all the usual links are dead or taken down

Surprisingly-good.

gerdamn. I'm not entirely disappointed because I feel like they handled cancelling the comic in a decent manner.

>has any sort of following thanks to these people
>has any sort of an income from art thanks to these people
>FUCKING ENTITLED FANS!
Yeah, how dare these people give her a living that doesn't involve a McJob and then ask if she's planning on doing more! Fucking entitled shitlords!
>maybe she didn't want to be associated with her old work
Artists are the only group of people I know who demand the right to erase parts of their history they don't like. You don't see musicians pulling their debut albums, you don't see movie stars suing studios to get their early films pulled, only in the art field do you see this sort of behavior. Or people attempting to defend it.

>>92643879
Sure, but they didn't run out and try to get the record and song pulled permanently. Them not wanting to play the song again is just like an Artist saying "No, I'm not going to make more of that stuff." Nothing is wrong with that.
>>92602695
And it wasn't depressing or stupid OR sudden.
Comics that don't take themselves/subject matters seriously nearly always have the best writing for some reason.
I really liked Astray3
Looks like both the old a new site are down, and the creator hasnt posted on twitter in years
wish i could know the ending
>>92643678
This is exactly why I keep my PFSC archive on my hard drive. It takes up 400 MB and I have zero intention of reading it, but knowing John Campbell wants it wiped off the face of the earth makes it so good.
>>92643678
Sometimes you do stuff for money or attention and you know it's insincere but you feel like you have to so that you can get a foot in the door. When you see — or feel threatened — that people associate you with that work instead of work that actually represents you it can chew at you pretty badly.

We might get more soon. He stopped updating because he was hired to work on the sonic comic.
>>92640012
Fuck this shit, I want him to get back to HIKYM. Though my understanding there is he fucked up with some ownership thing there possibly with it getting picked up that ended up in development hell or something?
>>92641025
You forgot:
"Let's pay our small inner circle of artist and writer friends to make these comics even though some of them have little to no familiarity with the source material and there are hundreds of fans producing similar content for free already."
What a boondoggle.
>>92645251
I accept that reasoning for old porn commissions and such, but actively trying to purge old webcomics from the internet is just plain childish. The mature response is to make a public announcement explaining why that work isn't representative of their interests/abilities/opinions anymore and asking fans to let it rest. Expecting amateurs to act professionally is stupid, I suppose, but it doesn't help that artistic communities tend to be hugboxes that encourage self-indulgent behaviour.

The dodgeball arc was such a transparent case of 'oh shit I have all these side-characters I forgot about. Let's drag out an extended arc featuring them all prominently, and lets also dump even more characters and slam us with their generic QUIRKY personalities rapidfire style.'
It got old fast but died slow. But the problem was Zack followed it up by hitting us with even more rushed characterization that was really at odds with the slow and steady introductions we used to get.
>>92638527
More of a case of a dead author rather than a dead webcomic.
i never actually read this but when i discovered the only site hosting it was dead i put it upon myself to excavate it
blue dog
Because the creators sold out to make shitty 'gaming' videos with dated jokes.
So what makes creators just up and quit their work?
>>92640901
They went to Namek for a little while during that beach arc, and the artist shifted priority to non-schoolie OC character design and professional commissioned work. Some people haven't given up hope yet, those poor bastards.

Loss of interest in the project, changes in life circumstances that impact their free time, or problems with resolving the plot: writer's block, writing themselves into a corner, failure to plan the story out in advance, etc.
I'd say the first one is most common, at least in webcomics.
Found this a few months back only to find out that it had been dropped after having barely started. I can't find the chapters anywhere anymore.

Tatsua's creation is more of a zombie webcomic variety.
All reason for it to live is long gone, but peculiar malice of spirit stirring within keeps it going.
>>92646460
I dunno, he's pretty busy with Diesel now over at Boom Comics. I know he also did the art for the Gumball comic, but I don't know if that's still going or not.

well if you can't find it there, then yes, highly likely
even recent pastebins with magnet links are taken down
Broken Plot Device feels like a shell of it's former self, so to me it kind of -is- dead even though it still continues (after spending 3 years in limbo).
Initially it was cancelled because Lizardbeth broke up with her boyfriend, and since one of the characters (Sid the lion) was based off of him, it presented an issue for her, and she retooled the comic entirely. It used to be a wacky slice-of-life comic with supernatural hijinks and pretty solid humor, but the revival feels rather bland and uninspired and we have yet to see any other side characters besides Inix and Sunny (I'm betting Sid will never show up for reasons I mentioned above. Important message, kids; don't base characters in your comic on friends or love interests, things might get sour down the line).I'd still tap Inix.
>>92634851
The plot looked like it was hitting the final stretch. She and the American had teamed up and were hunting the demon down, they were having a moment about their future relationship, etc. Killing the demon and solving the romance problem would be the plot.
>>92629094

How are you using the magnet link? I copy the complete magnet string and paste it into qBittorrent's File/Add link to torrent, and it works.
I retest this every few months, and it still works, just retested it now and there are active seeds.
The string starts "magnet:?" and ends "ftracker.glotorrents.com%3a6969%2fannounce", if that helps.

>>92652767
What bugs me is he's still getting paid to write/draw Scalie Schoolie and Death by Misadventure. Patreon was a mistake.
Shame the artists newest thing is insanely boring and un interesting filled with just bland unlikable characters.
>>92662040
Even if it were incredibly interesting and full of amazing characters, I wouldn't trust her enough to try to read another one of her comics. She'll probably drop this one too.
>>92662138
The shit she did before were little pet projects but since Hinabn, she has been working as a professional comic artist / being funded through patreon.
Its a shame that the project that she isn't going to drop is easily her worst one so far.
