There was a good thing with the disbanding of the original team as well. Jean being dead was nice, especially after Dark Phoenix Saga. Bobby trying to fucking make something of himself in college was nice. Warren was off being a businessman. Even Scott and Hank were almost out of the X-men. Hank was an Avenger and Scott was on his way to becoming a family man.

Claremont started it back in the 1970s, but it was just an issue or two of Logan having feelings for her that he never expressed. It never went anywhere at the time, he introduced Mariko as Wolverine's love-interest about a year or two afterwards.

It didn't really become a big thing until Claremont went back to it again in the mid-1980s, with a story in Classic X-Men retconning it into a mutual attraction.

From there on, it never really went anywhere, but never really went away either. Jean had feelings for Logan, but loved Cyclops more. It was a thing in the 1990s cartoon, as well. The movies just brought it back after years of not really being an issue.

There's that run, and an Excalibur run focused on Xavier and Magneto, but both really keep him apart from the X-Men, as if accepting that Morrison was right about them needing to move past him, and neither of those books really figured out a lasting new role and purpose for him.

No-one at Marvel wanting him to be in charge of the X-Men again, and not knowing what to do with him, eventually resulted in most of the AvX writing team choosing to just kill him off.

I loved Jean for her fucked up potential. She hid a lot of her darker impulses, which was the point of the Phoenix arc and her encounter with the Hellfire Club. Jean is a telepath with control issues that are scary even by telepath standards, she is addicted to power and does not know how to interact with it without it tearing apart the identity she's forged for herself. Half of why she was so "boring" was because she was an incredibly repressed person, which makes sense since most of her training from a young age from Xavier was about repressing many parts of herself.

I liked when she went into Emma's mind and fucked her up about her students vindictively because of the affair with Scott. I liked the overkill. She'd be good as a self righteous character that struggles to be good, is on the good side, but has way more bad tendencies. Her and Emma were actually decent foils to each other in Morrison's run, even if I have issues with his characterization of both.

There's a lot that she could be, complex and fun and even fun to hate if you want to go there, but she's both boring to like and annoying to hate right now and has been for a while.

Then Scott dumps Madeline to get back with Jean, Emma telepathy fucks Scott pretending to be Jean, so she goes to fuck Logan again for revenge. Then she dies again.

If you want my advice, for what it's worth, here it is. Turn O5 Jean into a villain and be done with it. The biggest problem with Jean though is that the whole Scott/Logan/Jean triangle has become her thing for a while now.

I honestly think the best way to write her is in an X-Men book which revolves around the Summers Family and all their various misadventures. Write her as the Team Mum, cut down her attraction and stories revolving around Logan, focus on her relationship with her family and kids. Then, occasionally have cosmic stories revolving around the Phoenix.

Honestly? I don't think it's about Jean so much as it is about Scott. Remember, Jean was the first real 'host' of the Phoenix. While in her, it felt everything that it couldn't feel before. Hate, anger, passion and most importantly, love. Love for Scott Summers. It is also heavily implied that the Phoenix in Rachel's reality resurrected Jean and gave Scott a daughter so that he wouldn't feel alone.

Jean is essentially a vessel, a vessel for the Phoenix to express its love towards Scott Summers.

Hell, it possessed Rachel longer than it did Jean, for what I presume was essentially mother-daughter bonding.

It was only after the goddamn mess that was AvX and whatever the fuck that Hopeless was doing now that the Phoenix, which changed its fundamental nature.
