You storytimed this already so I'm just going to say two things before I go to bed:

1. Beacon Hill does not look like that at all.

2. I thought it was pathetic how much help Diana needed to save the day, and in the end she won because her magic lasso fixes everything instead of because of her wits or fists.

>>
>>92523817
That was probably me, I've been repeating that a lot lately.

Again, the original Amazons were created by the Greeks essentially as anti-female propaganda. A kind of cautionary tale about what would happen if those wily women got any kind of power.

Our old buddy William and his wives thought that was every bit the disgusting neckbeard pile of whoreshit it is, and so made the DC Amazons the rough opposite of the Greek Amazons. Kind, compassionate, distrustful of men sure, but only because they had suffered the indignities of the ancient world's rampant misogyny. They held arms only for self defense, not to make war, cause war only ever brought them misery.

What's consistently annoying is that despite this being one of the most dirt simple concepts ever, people keep missing the fucking point!

One of the retroactively disliked aspects of this run is that Perez made Steve Trevor a much older man, and thus was no longer a love interest for Diana.

This is probably the single biggest reason why Steve is still seen today as "uninteresting" and is no longer so closely associated with Wonder Woman.

Tex, I'm curious for your opinion on something.

You know how people often say Diana is the unfitting third wheel of the Trinity? So here's why that's bullshit. Clark is the bright optimist, Bruce is the dark pessimist, so logically, this should mean that Diana is the mediator, yeah? Except, in practice, no, this doesn't happen. Which is especially baffling given she's her homeland's ambassador, meaning sorting out conflicts is literally her job.

So, got any thoughts on why writers don't do this even though it's staring them right in the face?

I used to think the same thing about Diana, but honestly I see it kind of differently now.

Clark is an optimist but still believes strongly in justice, that criminals should pay for their crimes. He sees the good in people but also the darkness.

Diana is the one who truly believes in and loves all people, even villains.

So in my mind, Clark is the one who would be the mediator there: he is hopeful like Diana, but understands the necessity of violence like Bruce.

P00005.jpg
2MB, 1440x2264px
Despite that, a lot of writers do give a lot of lip service to the idea of Diana as the diplomat or ambassador, the one who sees both sides. But I don't think they follow through with it at all. A really good example is early on in Injustice (which someone was posting the other day) Diana usually starts an encounter by trying to talk, as if the writer wanted to show that she's diplomatic, but ultimately she jumps straight to whipping out the sword when diplomacy fails.

I think that that's because it's harder to write a superhero who solves problems through alternative means and easy to write them having big fights.

And OK, it's a comic book, so sometimes you gotta have big fights.

P00008.jpg

Anyway, in one sense Diana is the diplomat, because she wants both sides to be happy and understand each other. But in another sense I don't think her mentality falls right in between Superman and Batman like many say, I see her more as a third point on a triangle.

P00010.jpg

I say it over and over again but I think people confuse both Superman and Wonder Woman being nice as being the same. Obviously there's not as clear of a dichotomy as there is between Superman and Batman (dark and light, day and night, peanut butter and jelly) but she does indeed have a different viewpoint than Superman.

Think of Superman as the "antifa" people or whatever liberal protest group is big right now, and Diana as a classic hippie.

P00014.jpg
1MB, 1440x2228px
As some folks in my threads have pointed out, writers do try to push Superman and Wonder Woman as being these great friends, but it always feels forced. They're friends, but don't seem any closer than they are to anyone else on the League.
>>
>>92524606
>>92524619
See, I reject the idea that it's harder to do that. A good writer can add tension to a conversation, and keep it from getting stale by adding variation. A ticking clock, hostages, etc. Even the Injustice example is acceptable, just have her at least try to take a foe down. Hell, have try and negotiate during the fight if you really need an action scene.

Every time I hear "But that's haaaaard!", I can't help but think that's the laziness and creative bankruptcy taking.

>>92524632
Nessie is like Diana's Jimmy Olsen, but with sober discussions of women's issues and a Boston accent. It's pretty great.

And IMO, I do like Diana being perceived as a little bit of a stick in the mud, it gives her a character flaw. Though she can definitely have fun from time to time.

Superman is the friendliest guy ever. So I think that's an aspect that differentiates the two.

You can actually tell the exact point in Byrne's run where he actually reads Perez's run, because suddenly Decay shows up, Diana saves Cheetah through the power of friendship, and he even has a part where he just straight up recaps the entire run and spells out Diana's powers.

The issue is that they keep ignoring their backgrounds. Diana is a princess, Clark is a farm boy, Bruce is a trust fund baby. A good first step is to decide how these three would get along.

She definitely grows throughout the run, but handles things more maturely instead of getting more angry. You see her form her ideology on peace challenged by man's world, but she comes out with a stronger belief.

Rucka's run had her a bit more angry and stoic, which some of us speculate might have been intentional to show her being a bit fed up with Athena's shit.

The subplot with the gun has a great payoff.

I feel like Earth One has so many good ideas that they actually all overshadow each other. I'm hoping when he gets done with volume 2 in 2027 it gives things more room to breathe.

Also another issue is that when they DO look at their backgrounds, they look at Diana and say "warrior" instead of what Themyscira is actually like.

Perez did that because he wanted to make SM/WW a thing, which is seriously don't get it. You just introduced the myth of Herakles wrecking the amazons and made it so much worse than it already was, so why do you want to have WW lusting for the world most powerful man precisely because of said powers?

I can't remember if I read this in a post here or in an interview but apparently a theme of Rucka's run was supposed to be Diana struggling with the morality of killing monsters. A whole run? A fascinating challenge that would be. I want it.

Sorry to dump fanfic on you all, but I've had an idea brewing for a while. It's basically The Superior Foes of Wonder Woman. Basically, it's mostly about a bunch of the lesser Wonder Rogues just going about their days, with Diana herself taking on more of a supporting role, hovering over their shoulders as they try, and mostly fail, to go straight. I think that could probably go all the way through without a brawl.

Maybe there should be less emphasis on the Trinity altogether. Have Diana hang out with the other Leaguers. The ones that immediately come to mind are Arthur and Billy. She and Arthur could talk politics and foster relations between their respective nations, and Billy could have a cool big sister figure.

Hell, people responded quite positively to her interactions with Lex, and liked that she was always keeping him honest by encouraging good behavior.

The original Steve was literally a pastiche of Captain America, meant to show young boys that you can be manly and macho while still showing appreciation for the fairer sex.

In the 60's he was just kind of generic brave guy. You know how Lois Lane at the time was basically just eternally trying to trick Superman into marrying her? It was kind of like that, with Steve being in love with Wonder Woman but not noticing Diana in her secret identity.

Post-Crisis I feel like Perez got him closer to being a Captain America type of guy, but he's older and pushed further back as a supporting character so he doesn't get much screen time.

As for John Byrne, he's just John Byrne. Extremely weird man who happens to be pretty talented.
>>
>>92525643
Funny you mention Giganta, cause I was kinda toying with the idea of her being the viewpoint character. The series would be called Villainy Incorporated, after the old school name for when Wonder Rogues teamed up en masse. Doris would get a legit job at Veronica Cale's company, along with several other rogues (ever noticed a lot of them are scientists?) and it's basically a work-com with super villains.

Hoo boy, this is why we need a compilation image. I'd do it myself but I'm too lazy and I feel like I'd miss something anyway.

Long story short, Byrne has an unnerving obsession with underage girls, having written stuff like an older Superman kissing a teenage girl (in a non canon story, thankfully), in addition to other pervy stuff like having Superman and fellow heroine Big Barda shoot a fucking porno while mind controlled (that one actually WAS canon)

One idea is to try and redeem her villains, but the problem there is that if it doesn't work, she HAS to get physical, and if it does work, she runs out of villains, so you're forced to introduce more villains and then you end up with the same problems, which is why I've never been a fan of the whole "Diana should have a run where she goes around trying to redeem her villains".

Here it is:

http://www.cbr.com/comic-legends-superman-wonder-woman-nearly-had-a-one-night-stand/

Since the link is littered with pics of SM/WW i'll post the pertinent part here:

>George Perez had other ideas. In 1990, when he was still writing the “Wonder Woman” comic book series, he discussed the idea in the Amateur Press Association fanzine “TitanTalk”. Here is Perez…

>Also on my Wonder Woman agenda is a one-shot prestige format book tentatively titled “Rendezvous”, and it is a romance story with Diana and Superman to be edited by Karen. It will, at last, really deal with the physical relationship between these two popular characters. In other words, they do it. Due to the nature of the story, I will probably be using the Gods as a means of allowing the reader his or her option to regard or disregard this tale as part of DC continuity. I have no intention of treating this story sensationally, but there are definitely some mature themes I’ll wish to explore.

>Recently, at this year’s Dragoncon, during a Wonder Woman panel, Perez restated that he had started on plans for a one-shot graphic novel along those lines, but it didn’t end up materializing. At the Dragoncon panel, Perez seemed to insinuate that it might have been because his view was that Wonder Woman was going to be a bit underwhelmed, considering that she was expecting practically a god and he noted that DC was a bit wary about making Superman look bad.

Her best villains are unredeemable, which I think makes great conflict, because you have Diana truly believing to the last that she can help them, but they just push her too far. Dr. Psycho and Circe are good examples, and Jimenez did a great fight with Circe where she tries so hard to talk Circe down.

I feel the island lesbian stuff is kind of icky in the context of them all raising her like a niece. But unless you add in other kids you can't really get around that I guess.

Absolutely this, Cap works easily because he's a "relic", Steve is harder to sell as that kind of guy because he's in the modern age.

Supposedly the movie relationship is good, so hopefully that endears some writers enough to do something interesting with them.

It does have a weird connotation but technically not EVERYONE on the island would be that close to Diana as a kid, since there's over 3,000 Amazons and she lived there for "only" 22 years.

She could have met Mala and she was like "Diana? Oh, I've never heard of you" and Diana was like "How cool is that!"

Aside from her giantess fetish (which is about as subtle as Rebecca Sugar's shortstack fetish), I think what really drew Gail to Doris is that she's always been Diana's token "not actually all that evil" villain. Doris's crimes are usually just robberies, property destruction-chump change by super villain standards. And that makes it easy to give a less hostile relationship with her superhero. She can be more morally complex, sympathetic, which means delicious character development.

How do you feel about Gateway City, Texas? Personally, I like it in an ironic, oh-how-cute-is-Byrne's-autism kinda way. I mean, the man just HAD to give Wondy her own fictional city, didn't he? And it's even based on a Golden Age DC city to boot!

Byrne seriously tries to give it its own character like Metropolis and Gotham but he just couldn't do it.

Also the fact that every fucking time he shows it it's CGI for some goddamn reason.

Gateway City: America's First CGI City!

Boston at least comes with a history, and it's not New York or LA.

He's basically the inverse of Diana in every way, but Diana could easily become his follower if she gave into the warrior roots of the Amazons.

Which is why it's so disturbing when people stress that she's a warrior or have her banging her sword on her fucking shield. It's the opposite of what she stands for, and becoming that is her worst nightmare.
