He failed the minute Aku threw him into the future. His family and people are long dead, Jack is trying to change the past. Of course, by doing that, he also logically kills everyone he ever saved in the future.

Sorry that Samurai wasn't prepared for a surprise time portal. All Jack knew before the fight was that Aku was a shapshifter invulnerable to attack and that Aku can shoot laser beams.

I think I would've preferred that quandary over the one we have. I don't really dislike it, but having the decision over so many more lives and making a judgment over which ones to sacrifice and which ones to save feels so much more interesting and weighty than Jack struggling with a more personal loss on his journey to defeat Aku.
