Yup. Superman had broken up with her because he was feeling inadequate being with her without his powers, since he couldn't be the stronger of the two anymore or act as the protective boyfriend like his upbringing told he should be, instead having her worried about him trying fix his problem or protect him from danger. Specially in her brutish manner that wasn't helping at all.

But when he finally got his powers back he learned he was dying and there was no solution to it. So instead of going back to her like he wanted he thought it would be for the better if he kept things as it is and just try to stay away. This way maybe she wouldn't try to exert herself trying to fix something there was no solution to or feeling worse by being with him for a bit only to lose him again.

Just look at the that panel you posted. You've them reaffirming their special friendship in a attempt to make it stick in reader's mind, but where's the chemistry showing us this to be truth? It's always them going: "Oh, Kal, you're my greatest friend and the only one truly knows me", "Diana, you're like a sister to me. You're the only one i can be truly open", "They will never understand our connection. They just wouldn't understand", "We're truly equals, Kal, like none other", and so on, but there's no proof of that great dynamic. When they're not going on about how how much they've in common, more often than not they're shown not understanding one another or butting heads over something.

It suffers too much of just telling and not showing.

As for Clark and Diana they really needed to build their friendship more before throwing them together but they never did. Hell New 52 Clark and Lois were pretty shitty as well.

Yeah Clark and Lana were the only ones that rang true for me (and Lana was shit pre-New 52).

Although personally I just wish Wonder Woman would stop being paired with Batman and Superman, also give her a story where she teams up with Hal or Barry or someone else that's not Bruce and Clark. We get Bruce and Clark paling up with people outside their little Trinity group and Diana at the most occasionally gets a few issues with Aquaman but she really has no relationship with the other Leaguers.

The problem with the Superman/Wonder Woman ship is what DC wants out of it.

I mean, any decent writer could take two characters, not matter how alike or different they might be, and make them work as a couple and have their romantic stories be interesting and cute.

But the problem is how DC approach the pairing. The concepts and character traits they want to accentuate and push with it. It's always about them two being DC's biggest icon, which in the stories end up translating into them being the most powerful and important heroes ever, and their superficial similarities that make them complement each other well as brands, which in the stories end up translating into them relating with one another thanks to their powers and interacting mostly through their superhero personas. Then there's the need to sell Superman as the biggest guy ever, including bigger than Wonder Woman, which in the stories translate to him playing the strong and protective boyfriend type, and the need to sell Wonder Woman as GIRL POWER thing, which in the stories translate to her playing the baddass warrior chick that answer to no man other than HER MAN.

That's mostly why their romances end up being somewhat unappealing with both acting a tad out of character.

I disagree I've read a few comics like Superman #661, League of One, Midsummer's Nightmare, Busiek's Trinity enough to know that I've liked their relationship there. I liked how Busiek wrote them with Diana occasionally teasing Clark about things, Clark joking with her, both hanging out as Clark Kent and Diana Prince (it was post Heinberg) and talking about balancing both their super and non-super lives, both of them occasionally annoying Bruce when he got too broody, etc...).

I disliked Rucka take on the matter.

First because it implied that Steve and Diana never truly dated before, meaning that Diana lost her virginity to Clark. That bothers me. Diana can date anyone, but Steve, her origin love interest, should be her first. Otherwise it just turn into bragging rights for Superman, Batman or whoever.

Second because you've Diana there saying that it was simple to be with Clark and given how the relationship started this imply is all because of super-powers, like with anything relating to this pairing. You've even Steve point it out. I hate the idea that Diana's such a vain person to see super-powers as a plus in such matters because she can't relate or deal with someone who's not gifted that way like her.

Of course, Rucka did it to imply that Steve and Diana relationship has always been more complicated because it ran deeper and that was why they danced around each other all these years afraid to take the first step, but man... i did not like the implications it created.
