It's not as bad as it looks. She basically kidnapped the kid and the kid has $200 billion+ dollars, about 25% of it Taskmaster's. He -needed- that kid and gave her a chance to stand down.

It was brutal to kill her, and even a bit cold, but Task also has a thing about people shooting at him when he gives them a chance to give up. He's very "you have one opportunity here to stand down."

My guess is that the backups also allowed easy-access to the money once she connected it to a computer. Maybe she was hoping to skim enough off to live comfortably and buy protection. Escaping from the Bank is only half the solution. STAYING escaped is the real problem.

I don't think she's a dirtbag, per se, just desperate and not thinking straight. I absolutely agree it was cold as hell of Tony to kill her, but I think that his motivations are understandable, too. Think about it; he has had Bank handling his money for years, assuming there was a complex system in place. Now he finds out all of his money - and everyone else's - is being entrusted to an [autistic?] child. Even if he didn't want Kingpin and Hydra's money, he just found out a fucking eleven year old or whatever has the secret to his entire savings. Likely billions of dollars, considering he's got 3 Cayman/Offshore/Swiss acounts.

So he -needs- his kid. And the mom is clearly not rational. He tries to talk her down, and she shoots at him. Could he have easily non-lethally dispatched her? For sure. But he's working against the clock here, this is a pretty wild situation, and he also has an established history of -really- hating people shooting at him [see his fight with Daken, his second mini, also by this same writer].

So I don't think either Task or Mariana were fully in the right, but I also don't think either were evil. I think it was two people who -really- needed the kid for equally valid reasons who weren't willing to compromise. Marianna's mistake was irrationally lashing out at Taskmaster; Task, meanwhile, was disproportionate in his retribution.

I'm not justifying his extremity, just pointing out his motivations seem well beyond comic villainy to me. This is a big deal for him.

True. I'm not arguing with you here on Taskmaster's motivations here. This comic shows Tasky's professional side very well. Personally, the act of killing the mom was rough, but he's not some huge code of honor guy either. He gave her a chance, which is more than what most mercs would do. Maybe he plans to use the kid as leverage against the other clients, but that feels like it will bring just as much heat on him, so who knows?

But yeah, her stealing both the kid and the backup... I'm not sure what her plan was, even in an irrational sense. It doesn't wreck the story, but it's a wrinkle for sure.

Van Lente is one of the few comic writers I trust. Even if his stuff is out there it's usually explained, or sensible. I -hope- Task doesn't use the kid as a hostage. That'd be a bridge too far for me, especially since in Van Lente's 2010 run, he emphasizes that Task does draw the line at really amoral stuff.

The way I see it, this can go three ways in terms of what kind of character it paints Taskmaster as.


1. Taskmaster is protective of the kid and wants him to be safe from the craziness as much as he needs the numbers. This would be the most moral option. If cornered he'll risk himself for the kid.

2. Task just wants the numbers but won't go so far as to risk the kid for it. If he's cornered he'll give the kid away and make his escape. I think this is probably the most likely, since Task often errs on the 'true neutral' side.

3. Task takes the kid hostage to get what he wants. I think this would be a bit too dark for him, and way more extreme than killing his mother. I hope it doesn't go this way and my opinion of Van Lente will take a hit if it does.

I completely agree with Van Lente. I actually get to interview him in about 10 days for my podcast! I may ask him about these gaps, but I do have a lot of respect for the guy. He's a real "nerd" writer who isn't ashamed to write in the Marvel universe and make shit work from the inside out.

Personally, I think Taskmaster is a bit disgusted that the Bank made his kid part of the business, which is why he terminated the contract. But clearly, he does want his money protected, so we'll see where it goes.

Even though I don't care about Deadpool or Punisher, I'm glad Van Lente is getting to write some major characters. Deadpool vs. Punisher 2 did #29 spot last month, which is way better than anything he's done for them before.

That said, I only really care about four characters in Marvel these days:

1. Taskmaster
2. Pod/Enigma
3. Magik
4. X-23/Wolverine/Laura Kinney

Tragically I mostly tend to fall for side characters.
