I wouldn't say either piece is inherently "better" than the other, but that comics are a lot longer and develop Scott alongside his relationship with Ramona a lot more. I think both are pretty great desu.
Oh, the game is amazing too, really great beat-em-up with a God tier soundtrack.

IMO the movie completely missed the point of the comic.

In the comics it's supposed to be clear that Scott is an asshole with a huge ego who lives in a fantasy world.

The movie played it completely straight and you're supposed to envy Scott's life.

The movie is just >>92342117, a hipster urban fantasy with just enough video game references to make someone feel 'nerdy'.

One of the biggest flaws of the movie is not pointing out how Gideon and Scott are pretty similar, both being narcissists who can't get along with their exes.

Another flaw is showing Scott's friends as the good guys. The comic does a wonderful job of pointing out every character's flaws, from Scott's and Gideon's narcissism to Ramona's inability to face her problems, to a whole lot of jealousy.
The movie justifies all of their actions.

There are things the movie does better and then there are things the books do better.

The movie makes a few of the fights more interesting (Lucas Lee was way better, the Katayanagi twins are better), but it cuts out a ton of character development, backstory, and some characters entirely (Lisa, Scot's family, Knives's family) and relegates some more important characters to background or bit parts (the Katayanagi twins, Envy, Kim).

Overall the comics have a lot more to offer than the film, so if you enjoyed the movie enough to be intrigued by the comics then you might not regret buying them.

I thought the movie was a lot of fun and I wish I could be in an orgy between all those girls, Kim is fuckin cute.

It's the same quality as the movie, just longer. If you liked the former, you'll like the latter at the same Enjoyment Per Unit Time. The video game is better than both.

They should have kept the original ending where he stayed with Knives. It would have driven home that all the different versions are separate continuities and that the abbreviated nature of the movie was not just taken for granted; because Scott didn't have the literal months he had in the comic to come to terms with his assholeishness, he's still not completely mature at the end of the movie (but enough to justify going with Knives). But I guess it tested badly with audiences.

Same shit killed I Am Legend.

comics are great though the ending was kinda botched. but enjoy the ride, its quite comfy.

the large reason why the movie orginally moved towards knives was that the movie's plot was written when the comics were still ongoing so alot of it was written to fill in blanks that weren't filled in yet

the changes to make it more in line with the source material most likely happened when the comic finished since the final book was released a few months before the movie.
