1987 - The G1 movie.

1993 - "Greg Universe an The Extreme Protectors of The Galaxy" is launched as a revamp of the show, ala "GI Joe Extreme" or "Transformers G2". There was also the four issue Malibu comics mini-series.

1995 - The Original japanese production company releases "No Need for Greg", which reworked the original anime as a romantic comedy.

2011 - CN buys the rights to SU from mattel, as well as the riights to the original anime, and begins work on the current incarnation, which includes elements from both.

I know a guy who has the original fansubbed VHS tapes. he got them from a convention in 84.

The original had a villain called Mr. Frowny who was the biggest human threat. He only appears in one episode of the new series and is just a depressed dude now.

Going back, the original 80's show is just fucking awful. Animation errors everywhere, ham-fisted morality lessons at the end of every episode, and really inconsistent ...everything. It's just a mix of nostalgiafagging and toy fandom keeping this shit alive because that show was terrible.

There was a goddamn echo in Rose's voice every time she talked. And the animation kept switching between really shitty choppy movements, until they switch to that same damn smoothly animated punch every time. It's jarring to look at.

The designs for the gems were better.

As much as I missed old Steven, at least this one is different. 80's Steven was just Kid Vid: with the blond mullet, the jean jacket, fingerless gloves, backwards ball cap, Not!Converse sneakers and cutoff jeans, magic flying skateboard and being the lead guitar in the Gem's synth band; he was too much a product of the time.

Can't stand the sensitive, crying baby Steven we have hear, but, hey, this one's original and not some cookie-cutter cool kid.

Can we just focus on how much of a disappointment this new adaptation is? Because it's not just bad, but it feels like I'm actively being teased.
My favorite arc in the original series was the one where every week, there'd be a new Gem with a cool new power trying to assassinate the Crystal Gems, and the Homeworld Trio had to help out because they got roped into it.
I always loved the HW trio as a kid and that arc made me want to see them redeemed for real.
But holy shit was I wrong. Lapis and Peridot are just shitty memes in a barn now. And Jasper, who, as we all know, used to be the best character, just jobs constantly. They couldn't even make him (or should I say her, right Sugar?) die with dignity like in the original. Like, seriously? Raping a dog and getting AIDS? Fuck you.

We're like 5 seasons in and we still haven't gotten to the Moonbase arc yet, even though they've teased it three fucking times now.

I even miss the filler arcs, I get that most of the planet hopping during the Greg Retrieval Arc wasn't canon, but it was cool to see alien races outside of the gems, way before the actual show integrated them.

Yeah, the Toonami Chronology has been weird since the 80s. It began with the Voltron Trinity comprised of GoLion, Albegas, and DaiRuger. Then when time came for original stuff, they introduced the Crystal Gems as allies for the Gladiator Force around the same time they localized the Robot Romance Trilogy and when it came time to retire the Voltron name in favor of the Toonami Branding suggested by Kenner, they got a bigger role in No Need for Greg and don't get me started on how it was completely re-made as Tenchi Muyo.

What the fuck happened to Bismuth? I remember her being a kick ass blacksmith in the original series, creating new weapons for the Gems to use to counter Homeworld's superior tech and numbers. The Breaking Point weapon, which was used to kill PD in the original show, was something both she and Rose worked on because they had no other choice. That whole story line was really good, because it was something that really hit both Rose and Bismuth hard, not only because they had to shatter someone but because they had to shatter Pink Diamond, who'd been the kindest of the Diamonds and someone that actually seemed to care for them. They had to do it to save Earth, it wasn't something either of them wanted to do.

But the new series makes it so that Bismuth created it to shatter any Homeworld gem, making her look like she was crazy. It was a missed opportunity, I'll admit it, but twas a nice homage. Same with the Andy episode, they even made a hilarious callback to Greg's original surname before the G1 rebranding with Steven Universe.

Honestly I think the additional Jasper characterization almost makes up for it. And the Peridot focus was pretty good for a while too (even if it was just lazily stealing from Aquamarine's character arc).
