Well, in the original seasons Aku pretty much chose the assasins he sent after Jack himself. I think to remember Demongo was his favourite until Jack defeated him, so I guess Scaramouche was the next in line.

I think the implication is that Aku has been holed up in the Pit of Hate ever since he destroyed the last time portal given that he's never left it at all over the course of the season barring that time he went to fight the Scotsman on his doorstep. As a result, the cult wants to kill Jack so he'll come back out.

So, I don't know if it's so much that he doesn't know they exist, but more along the lines of them wanting to bring Aku out of his depression.
