It's 2012 and Marvel has just announced a Guardians of the Galaxy movie is in production.

What was your reaction?
>>
>>92226737
What are the Guardians of the Galaxy?
>>
>>92226737
>They dumped Chris Pratt in a movie that the general audience has no idea what it's about? Guardians of the Galaxy's gonna suck!
that was actually my reaction back then
>>
>>92226753
you're not from around here are you

>>92226737
cautiously optimistic

slightly off topic, but i was the anon who said they'd never make a Suicide Squad movie because it had suicide in the title and would basically be more DCEU garbage that the reviewers would pick apart easily

turns out i was half right

still i was right about them never making a Metal Men or Shazam movie tho, so i got that going for me
>>
>>92226737
Unbelievable hype. This was when MCU Manaia was at its peak and we were in the afterglow of the Avengers.

Then they announced James Gunn and I expected it to flop. Gladly proven wrong when it became my favorite movie in the series.

Vol 2 was okay enough, and I still see all the MCU movies and shows just as something to do for fun, but I don't get hyped at all anymore.
>>
>>92226783
I was a pleb and didn't know who the Guardians were back then. I knew who Rocket Raccoon was, but not anybody else. I remember looking at that promo picture and thinking Gamora was She-Hulk.
>>
>>92226781
>>92226783
>>92226800
I think the general consensus was that it'd suck and there was no way to make something like this appeal to general audiences.

Now, it's weird to think that Rocket Raccoon and Groot are household names. And Ant-Man, somehow.

Hyped to the moon. Bummed out when that concept art showed up because it didn't have my favorite Guardian and the mask looked weird as shit, but just the sheer idea of one of my favorite Marvel books getting a movie was enough to give me two years worth of boner.
>>
>>92226737
It's going to be hilarious when this shit flops. Once again confirming why the man-children who still read comic books are barely more than marginalized caricatures of themselves. But instead of admitting you've become the most beta of betas, you'll complain for years how "good it was" and how "tasteless" the general public is in desperate attempts to try and divert away the soul crushing realization that you've wasted your lives on mind-numbing drivel originally designed to entertain teenage boys.
>>
>>92226866
And in posting that I just realised how much it fits BvS and Snyderposters
>>
>>92226866
I knew a guy who said these exact words. And when GOTG turned out to be a success, he kept on saying it even though people kept telling to quit being a tool.
>>
I was excited, James Gunn, a movie with a talking tree and raccoon. Was the most daring Marvel Studios was getting.

I was away from comics at the time, so I had no idea who these characters were
>>
>>92227061
It was obvious they were going to do a GotG movie back when they put them in EMH and UMvC3. People are shitting on MvCI for synergy but it's clear the point of UMvC3 was to give exposure to characters they were intending to make films for. Iron Fist was a topic Feige talked about as much as Guardians and Doctor Strange back then.
>>
>>92226866
This reads more like a shiypost against the directors cut extended universe than marvel
>>
>>92226737
Why is Drax wearing a shirt? Why is Groot naked? Why doesn't anyone at Marvel know how to draw a raccoon?
>>
What did people think when they found out James Gunn was directing it? I didn't pay too much attention to it in the prerelease period, but I found it amusing when I discovered it. Hadn't see Super by then still haven't, only Slither.
>>
>>92227431
Only knew Gunn as that guy Jenna Fischer divorced.
>>
>oh a new movie let's look at the chara...what the fuuu...Is that a raccoon? That a tree? What's that sexy mask?
>Let's look at the comic
>Welp. Time to trap myself in my room for a month and read all of DnA Cosmic !

This actually made the movie a bit less enjoyable for me, because I really dug the space war stuff, and the Nova's power roster, and all the weird shit and diverse lore.

The movie simplified and dumbed down a lot, while getting rid of some things I loved like how the Nova look and fight.

Still, loved the movie.
>>
>>92227584
>while getting rid of some things I loved like how the Nova look and fight.

But how can you top the creative stuff they did in the movie like linking all their ships together to create a force field?

And what is DnA? what do i look for if i would want to read it?
>>
>>92226737
>Wait, you mean that Raccoon from MvC3 is getting a movie?

DnA is the acronym for Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, who wrote Nova, Guardians and most of the cosmic line events. Start with Giffen's Annihilation, then move your way up the line.
>>
>>92226737
Literally who?
>>
>>92226737
I was really excited that there was a chance Nova could make it on the big screen
>>
>>92227048
Taserface, his bluster was quite entertaining. The only memorable thing about Korath was the "Who?" line and the admittedly great payoff for it later.

>after their first encounter Korath is the only person throughout the movie to identify Quill as Star-Lord
>greets him as such when they meet on the flagship
>Quill reacts with a big dumb grin
>"Finally."

That shit killed me.
>>
>>92227635
>But how can you top the creative stuff they did in the movie like linking all their ships together to create a force field?
I agree with you there. It was clever and made it worth it to not have my flying men.

I always use Guardians as an exemple of stuff that changed a lot from the book, but was a great adaptation and movie anyway.

> Triple H was considered the man who made Batista's career due to his star-making role in Evolution, and since then they've always had a deep respect for one another. Or so Dave thought…when, after he expressed a desire to make an appearance at SummerSlam 2014 to do some cross promotional work for Guardians of the Galaxy shortly following his departure at the end of The Shield feud earlier that year, Triple H and Stephanie McMahon actually laughed at the idea, saying "We don't even know if that movie will be any good." Needless to say, the best revenge is success; in this case, Guardians becoming such a huge critical and financial success it put to shame the entire WWE Studios catalog combined.

I guess nobody really had faith in this even outside of the usual places

Kino.

>>
>>92229555
I agree, not household names but they are hugely popular pop culture characters nowadays
>>

I was actually thinking it'd be really cool promotion for Avengers if the guardians actually set foot on earth during the movie to have fucking Batista as Drax come out and take on wrestlers in the ring as GLORIOUS BATTLE

Just have Gamora cheering for him to kill the wrestlers and Star Lord like oh shit no thats not what this is, its just for fun

Oh, the memories about this pic.

If I remember correctly, plenty of people were cautiously hyped by the movie, but they were also worried that a bunch of "literally whos" could ruin cosmic Marvel.

Then Ooga Chaka happened, and everyone said "yeah, this movie might be a surprise hit"

And then it was.
And then Vol. 2 happens, whichmight be considered one of the best hero movies ever.
And people are hyped by more cosmic adventures.

But at what cost?

Thanks for this image anon. I had it on an old PC and couldn't remember where to start back up on my marathon of Cosmic Marvel.

>No it isn't
Yes it is.

Sweet, I don't know a lot about them but I bet Thanos and Adam Warlock are gonna be in this, I can't wait!
>>

Most people yes, but /co/ freaked out when it was announced.

Thanos Imperative was storytimed as the issues came out, there was "Prepare to be guarded" hype images after the movie got announced.

If you didn't know the Guardians chances are you weren't a /co/mrade in 2012 or you were a cartoon fag.

Ronan could have been a good villain and it's not supposed to have reddit humor...and chris pratt was almost unknown at the time
>>
I was honestly super excited to see The Church of Truth attacking and getting beaten, as well as for the admittedly distant possibility of Phyla Vell getting written in a non-shitty way.

No, they're not right. If they stop hiring hacks like synder and trying to pawn shit off as "high art" then they could totally do a wonderwoman movie. Fuck if we got a Brave and the bold styled Aquaman flick with OUTRAGEOUS fights, and a good crew on it, it'd make bank.

Instead we got MARTHAAAAAAAAAAAA

Thanks to wb we're never getting a fucking brooster gold movie.

I hear they hired the fat guy from Parks and Rex. Why?

Loving the rumors that David Tennant is gonna be Rocket. Hope they're true. Rocket needs a British accent. And Vin Diesel would be a great Drax if they chose him.

I would have preferred the helmet, but that Star-Lord costume is pretty good. He's got the mask and the military costume. Looks like we're in good hands and if they decide to try that synergy fuckery, Quill won't be affected that badly.
>>
>>92226737
Aside from Rocket and Groot's obvious oddness, these guys are pretty serious characters which is great since Marvel could use a fantasy space thriller without the Iron Manesque jokes.
>>
>>92226737
i had no idea who were they so i wanted to read the comics then i discovered anhilation and the rest of the cosmic sagas

>It's 2012 and Marvel has just announced a Guardians of the Galaxy movie is in production.
Sigh. Deadpool was supposed to be out this year, but that looks to be scrapped. :(

>tfw I added Sam, Cosmo and the Thanoscopter

I'm glad this pic still floats around.

>Michael Clarke Duncan
I think he died before the movie was announced.
>>
"Oh cool, it sounds like just Avengers but in space."
"I'm cool with that."
>>
>>92250087
Nope. He had two months after the announcement. Enough to voice Groot in Ultimate Spider-Man, which I believe was his final role.

Didn't Momoa turn down Drax?

I don't get it.

Captain Sale, from a recent-ish Rocket Raccoon mini.
>>
>>92228246
Reminder that Triple H starred in the third Blade movie and was more forgettable than the actor who played Sabretooth in the first Xmen movie
>>
>>92226737
My first reaction was literally
>"Bullshit, there's no way Rocket Raccoon and Groot will be in a film before superheroes as famous as Wonder Woman is."
I deeply underestimated how incompetent Warner Brother's film division was back then and I no longer make that mistake.

>Don "black skeleton' Cheadle signs on and gets more money with 2 movies and face on toys
Lesson here? Just agree with the mouse if you want the money

>. Iron Fist was a topic Feige talked about as much as Guardians and Doctor Strange back then.

I wonder why he let the show shit all over it then. I know he's not in control of the shows, but he could've easily claimed Iron Fist for the movies.

Iron Fist was apparently bigger than the Netflix guys could handle. DD, Jessica & Luke were all great to alright. Iron Fist was fucking trash.
