What's the deal with this thing? Why is it so prevalent

That's a beanie. It's a hat. It was popular like a hundred years ago. I've seen kids wear them (more recently than that. this year, last year.) Obviously they still make them as that 20th century ball cap and the probably from-google picture of yours proves.

I have only seen one in my entire life.

I saw a kid wear it once when I was still in Kindergarten.
Always wanted to have one myself since then.

In my first job (IT service desk monkey) I helped the CEO of the company out a bit and got to know him. Even went to his place to fix his home computer, met his family, drunk his beer, played with his dog.

One day my boss the IT manager saw me talking to him, then when the CEO walked away he grabbed me and said "THE CEO DOESN'T WANT ANY PROPELLER-HEADED GEEKS BOTHERING HIM!"

Pfft... I wasn't even wearing my hat that day.
