Imagine being the Alan Moore in the comic book industry and having to be all like "damn, Marvel, your stories fuckin' fine, all epic with your rehashed content and horrific unoriginal jokes. I would totally read these comics, both in my jammies and in my underwear" when all he really wants to do is write another satirical parody of super hero tropes. Like seriously imagine having to be Moore and not only sit in interviews while DC flaunts their disgusting merchandise in front of you, the blockbusters barely concealing their putrid super hero odor and super greasy skin, and just sit here, reboot after reboot, hour after hour, while they perfected that new Avengers movie. Not only having to tolerate their monstrous fucking pandering but also their superiority attitude as everyone in the industry tells them they are THE FUTURE OF CAPE COMICS and DAMN CAP LOOK LIKE *THAT*?? because they're not the ones who have to sit here and watch his nerds hailing some gay octopus into types of autism you didn't even know existed before that day. He's not against relying on the past to create new works.

He's against taking ownership of intellectual property away from the original creators (except into the public domain), and he's against positioning unauthorized stories as "official" stories instead of acknowledging them as fanfic.

Moore would be a hypocrite if, for example, he tried to claim ownership over the Lovecraft IP, perhaps even going to court with the Lovecraft estate.

He's not a hypocrite, but instead he's leading by example, creating past-relying works in the way that he thinks the Big Two SHOULD (but choose not to).

I heard they've offered to give him the Watchmen IP several times over the last decade to repair relations between them, but he keeps refusing out of spite. And the thing about DC being corrupt is that those people who wronged Moore back in the 80s aren't the people running the company now. I read Jerusalem last year. It was a well-written book that did wonders in experimenting with prose. It also offered absolutely no new insights that you couldn't get from reading a bunch of old Moore interviews.
