IIRC the Harley & Ivy episode did have a lot of subtlety about them from how they met, to how Ivy treated Harley, to how Harley was around Ivy. Yeah they each got their own solo episodes now and then but I don't think he gave in to fan-demand. That's the thing though, for many people is how it subvert/change the way the character works that it's appealing. Ivy wouldn't give one fuck about humanity bit Harley has something that makes her change that way of act, that of think of hers, like Harley's charm is enough to break Ivy's wall. Harley is the same, her heart, mins and soul belongs to Joker, but Ivy is so caring, so protective of her that it makes her being in conflict with her own emotions and feelings about Joker. It's a relationship that it's based on subvertion of the characters traits.

For some people is the lesbian angle, for others is the caring and protective nature of them, for others is the subvertion of the them
