How Jeph Loeb, of all people, had THAT story in him, I'll never understand.

Fuck, it's late here and I was NOT paying attention, ok. Silver Surfer Parable and Requiem, Kingdom Come, and Planetary.

Tim Sale was the driving force behind those Loeb/Sale collaborations.

What constitutes as cape?
I guess if we're going DC and Marvel stuff I'd say Saga of the Swamp Thing and Vision.

IF I was interested in playing devil's advocate that's the line I'd go with. Having a hero as a side character doesn't necessarily make it "cape". But I've always felt the trenchcoat imagery was just a poor man's cape anyway so I dunno.

Superman: Red Son
>>
>>92100217
did you mean to make a new thread with this, anon
>>
>>92100192
Yeah, I ask because it honesty reads like well planned and written capeshit, but doesn't rely on the usual "punch everything that moves" solutions to problems.
I was going to post a picture of The Unwritten, but that's firmly not-capeshit
>>
>>92100170
>>92100153
Where exactly do we draw the line on capeshit.
>>
How has nobody said V for Vendetta yet?
>>
>>92100291
It's like the definition of porn "I know it when I see it."

There's really no set metric. A lot of stuff blends genre, especially since for a long time the american market only really allowed for wide publication of "capes". So they took other stuff and mashed it into preexisting titles to get it to market. Alan Moore's Swamp Thing is one example I'd argue isn't really cape while being cape.
>>
>>92100307
Not Capeshit.
>>
>>92100291
action-centric comic focused around a single character usually with enhanced abilities and a codename in a world like our own but with more fantastical elements?
>>
>>92100344
He literally wears a cape and a mask. V has a secret origin for fuck's sake. What part of it ISN'T cape?
>>
Does Saga of the Swamp thing not count? Red Son is very good, Kingdom Come.

Astro City
>>
>>92100377
>focused around a single character
Too many successful team books for this to be part of it.
>>
>>92100377
How many of these qualities would you say it needs to count?
>>
>>92100415
Seeing as how I posted both of those I can't really argue that. Fair enough.
>>
>>92100452
I think enhanced abilities and single character can be variable to allow for stuff like team books and The Punisher

but action-centric, codename, and our-world-but-with-fantastical-elements seem like the key identifying factors
>>
>>92099860
The explanation for why Batman changed his costume felt really weak. He said that he's out to scare criminals and not children, but who the hell would be scared of that?

>action-centric
I would call Watchmen action-centric.
>>
>>92100493
well it's not like criminals will be seeing in the full light of day
>>
>>92100512
there are of course exceptions, but obviously the presence of superheroes is the most immediately identifying factor.

This is for stuff like Hellboy or Lucifer or The Invisibles where it's not immediately obvious
>>
>>92100493
I feel like by that point his reputation was fear-inducing enough, and seeing the Batman (even if it was a cleaned up Adam West-y version) would induce a fair bit of dread.
>>
>>92100537
>Lucifer
Was there a cape even once in Lucifer? Its not any of what you describes either.
>>
>>92100569
that's what I'm saying, there was confusion over whether Lucifer and Hellboy were cape or not which led to the discussion of what defines a cape comic

Hellboy meets the criteria, Lucifer does not.
>>
>>92100537
>presence of superheroes
but see this is the problem. Now we need a definition of "superhero". An individual that performs feats beyond that of the average individual? Like 90% of characters in any medium fit that bill. We like stories because individuals do things that seem extrordaniary.

Do they need to have some sort of power or metahuman ability? There are plenty of "superheroes" that don't, technically. It all gets very muddled.

>Serious House

>Killing Joke
no
>1602
super no
>>
>>92101175
It's fantastical that Bond is able to do everything he does without starting multiple wars.
>>
>>92099962
most of the Loeb/Sale collaborations just plain paraphrased and summarized previous existing stories
>>
>>92101258
I'd put a pretty clear delineation between suspension-of-disbelief fantastical and gods-and-monsters-literally-walk-the-streets fantastical
>>
>>92101175
So a super powerful man with metal teeth, an assassin that kills with a razor sharp hat, and an antagonist that can't feel pain due to bullet lodged in his head that will eventually kill him aren't fantastical?

Condense down the Kid Loki saga with his follow up where he became God of Stories into one Omnibus and you have some good capeshit as literature.
>>
>>92099786
>Name one capecomic that is truly great
No such thing.
>>
>two garbage /lit/ threads
Get cancer.
Quality moderation as usual, by the way.
>>
Moore's Supreme, Miracleman, Millar's Authority, Gerber's Omega the Unknown, does The Maxx count?

>>92100257
That's such a damn good book though
>>
>Name one superhero movie that is TRULY good as cinema that isn't Logan or Guardians

Why does everything have to be "literature" for it to be good

Hot take: Most things aren't the new Casablanca or whatever the "perfect" production is to 4chan. Also, most things aren't bad. Therefore by process of elimination there must be some acceptable middle ground.
>>
I'd suggest The Long Halloween/Dark Victory? Artistically and narratively I thought those were at least as good as TDKR though I think they're very different. I don't think they're necessarily as kino as Watchmen, though.
>>
>>92100493
You need to remember that when he was first created the idea of vampires was becoming popular plus the paranoia that a bats bite would cause someone to go mad (rabies) played a big role in the name. Even today the idea of looking up at the sky and seeing this giant dark mass travelling towards you and knowing it probably will result in you having broken bones is a pretty good reason to be scared.
