If you can find the original online web-comic/book thing, I highly reccomend reading it.

It's just the year in the life of some asshole kid, from his perspective, and it's actually really interesting. He's a selfish asshole, but in a very relatable, understandable way. You get where he's coming from and he's very believable. The way the story progresses is neat to, just going through an entire school year, as the seasons go by and everything. The writing's really good too, it's just funny, the jokes are on point.

The collected books remove a lot of the charm, losing on the whole "1 year in the life of" thing, and a lot of the content just isn't as good frankly.

Hasn't Hirsch said that he sees more of himself in Mabel than Dipper. It often seems like Dipper represents Hirsch now or how he liked to imagine he was as a kid while Mabel was closer to the sort of kid he actually was in addition to taking basic traits from his sister..

Either way, I don't think Mabel is just his sister. I can't even remember him even indicating that she's supposed to only be his sister and not just a slurry of traits and characteristics he and the writers poured into one character like they did for just about every other major character on the show.

There aren't really specific moments, just a pattern throughout the series. She repeatedly took advantage of Dipper to get her way (as she acknowledged in Sock Opera), but she didn't change. She shat on him in Roadside Attraction, cried an ran away when Dipper wanted to do something with his life, refused to leave her literal bubble, and was only satisfied when she got her way. The whole "imma live with my uncle forever without asking my parents whoops my sister doesn't want me to guess i won't" thing was dumb too. It was a big opportunity shot down with no negotiation or compromise from any party.
Beyond season 1, she just became less and less relatable, and more and more insufferable.

People often forget that Dipper was a little shit, too. What he "gave up" during Time Traveler's Pig for example was purposely outright sabotaging Robbie's love life so he could steal Robbie's girlfriend, who didn't even like him, which is a huge asshole move.

The main difference is that the narrative lost interest in Mabel so Dipper was allowed to grow and change (because the writers actually cared about and paid attention to him) while Mabel, the writers stopped caring about her.
