1. Hype Train. Turns out that nostalgia + Waiting a long time = inflated expectations
2. People were expecting true Kino when all we really got is a TV mini-series that exists to wrap things up.

The point of this season (and I know that from Genndy interviews) is that Jack lost his way and doesn't seem as much heroic as he was in the past and overall more adult show yadda yadda. The most important thing in all of this is that 50 years has passed.

>Ep 1 has a pretty good introduction, that Jack has changed in a pretty believable manner, although I couldn't really understand why he went after robobugs but refused to help a village.
>Ep 2 Jack gets ambushed, okay. It's an intense episode, Jack has to run, him hiding and fighting back was done in a good manner.
>Ep 3 Jack fights back, there's a first sign of decline in subtlety when the wolf from the last episode shows up. There was no real reason to do that, in fact it would have been better if wolf just worked as a mirror for Jack for one episode. It was just more interesting that way. The fight with daughters was okay, it had some pretty noticeable and unnecessary errors but overall was just okay.
>Ep 4 was the one that started a huge decline of the overall season. Don't get me wrong, the setting was pretty fun as a nod towards old seasons but everything else... Ashi's persona was way too annoying. I get it, she hates Jack, but she doesn't have to behave like a spoiled child, even if she's young. Also Jack started quipping and acting like nothing happened in the last episode. When you think about it, there wasn't a good reason for Jack to care for Ashi and be friendly towards her, because she wasn't any different from other daughters. It shows that Genndy doesn't think like the viewer and makes it very apparent that Ashi is going to be an ally when it realistically should not be showed at this point. It was too early for that.
>Ep 5 was a total mess when it comes to pacing. Showing the evil of Aku should have spread over the whole season, that way it would have been more emotional, believable, just better. But nah, it worked like "okay here, and here" and it's done. Ashi is now good [cont]

Ep 7 The whole army thing was unnecessary, if it was just a fight between Ashi and her mother, it would have been much better and carried more weight to the whole Ashi's journey. Also it would have helped if Ashi wasn't sure if she really is on Jack side as I mentioned earlier. But nah, it was guaranteed that Ashi wasn't going to show any complex emotion or thought, just kill whoever that stands against her and Jack, whatever. Jack getting his sword was resolved in an anti climactic manner aswell [cont]

Also the way the pacing breaks down towards the end of it, just further shows that the 20 minute time constraints don't work with this new linear format. It worked a lot better when each episode was its own story.

Yeah I did want the episode to be longer, breaking away from the episodic format does make 22 minutes of story more disappointing than it used to be.

I was pretty shocked that Ashi handled the army so easily but I rewatched a lot of the older episodes before this, including the one where the Scotsman's wife steamrolled an army, that nearly killed Jack and the Scotsman, with her bare hands . I pretty easily turned my brain off my brain and just enjoyed the carnage.

I enjoyed Jack's scenes and Ashi's fight with her mother a lot too.

I remember getting hyped to watch the show every week after episode 1 aired. But since that drop-off from episode 3, my hype and interest died down immensely. I even forgot to watch it last night.

In the second to last episode it's revealed that Aku is literally the father of the Daughters of Aku. They are alive through his regenerative powers and come to aid him in the final battle. Because of Ashi's connection to Aku he's able to control her with his powers. In the end Jack faces a moral dilemma in killing Aku because Ashi's life will be on the line.

Episode 7 is a 7-8/10 that could've been a 10 if it was paced better. Ashi versus the orcs was a fun scene, but it took away screentime from Jack's journey to retrieve his sword, and Ashi's confrontation with the High Priestess, two events that the either season had been building up to (though I highly doubt she's actually dead)

Every episode has something going for it and 20 minutes pass seamlessly. Genndy really knew how to kick off things and probably blew too much time and money on it, let's just hope he knows how to end things too.

Unlike the rest of /co/ I'm not made because if pathetic shit like Jack shaving or a trained assassin killing a buch of dumb orcs. But the final scene with the priestess was rushed. This was supposed to be Ashi's final trial and there was absolutely no emotional depth to it. I'm assuming her mother is still alive so they can do round two since she had a Disney death.

To set a baseline for what I think a 10/10 Jack episode is, I would say Jack vs. Shinobi, Jack and the Haunted House and Jack and the Spartans are prime examples, the ones most memorable to me.

EP1 7.5/10 Fun episode and Scatman had some nice memey moments, although I don't think he was quite as memorable of a villain like Demongo.

EP2 10/10 Had outstanding tension and pacing and of course the incredible Ecstasy of Gold flavored music at the end. Easily as good as any classic 10/10 episode.

EP3 9/10 This episode of course had incredible action scenes and Jack killing the daughters like a boss. The scene with crazed Jack covered in blood was one of the memorable of the entire series. Only drops 9/10 because it didn't have an epic musical piece like the previous episode.

EP4 5/10 A few old school moments of humor but essentially nothing interesting happens.

EP5 5/10 Scotsman pandering was ok but went nowhere. Essentially nothing else interesting happened.

EP6 5/10 More nostalgia pandering. Was ok but essentially nothing interesting happened.

EP7 4/10 This whole episode made me sad.

I see two problems: 1. I don't think Jack works well with a side kick. It's not his style and it shatters the much cooler lone/wandering warrior theme of the original series. Too much time wasted on Ashi which could have been used to develop Jack's inner thoughts more. 2. I don't think SJ works well trying to stretch a single story arc over 10 episodes. It's clear that all of these middle episodes are filler and are devoid of substance. Everyone keeps saying it would have been a better season with a few more episodes. I'm the opposite, I think they could have jettisoned the Ashi waifu pandering and wrapped up this particular arc with fewer, but higher quality episodes.

The only episode I felt was "weak" was episode 6. I understand the point of the episode, but would have preferred the recurring characters to show up more organically throughout the series rather than just in a bunch of cameos.

I think all "pacing issues" come from the episode constraint. It's pretty much one major plot point per episode, and that's fine with me. It's gonna feel rushed because of it, but I still think the show is fantastic and enjoy every episode.
