I understand deviating from the source material to make it more palpable, like giving the character more human proportions, but if it looks so far removed from the actual character and you have to be told who the drawing is of, then that's gone too far.

It stops being the character I liked to a just another OC character I fap to, which makes me lose interest faster.

When all that you can recognize are the hair and eye color. EG bodystyle and harstyle have changed drastically, they're dressed in ways that the character would never be, they are acting in ways the character never would, etc.

If I like how it looks or not. That's pretty much it. Gaz, for example, wasn't attractive at all in the way she was drawn in the show. Meanwhile, Bigdad's version appeals to me because tits and ass while also still looking enough like the original that I can easily recognize her.

4chan has so many unique boards and decent levels of crossboarding making it difficult to sum up 4chan.

Tumblr has a lot of a freedom but it's actual community (I.E not the art dumps or porn sharing sections) is very much a hugbox that clings to a few ideas making it really damn easy to sum them up in a single image.

Arguably anything beyond pin-up and simple action poses is going to start making them a different character, the only exception being if it's art of a scene directly from their respective IP.
As soon as you give a character dialog or behavior that you created for them it's your own spin on said character.
Cheesecake and art of a character with more attractive features is a grey area, it's more wishful thinking than an OC variant.
