STEVE GERBER'S A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET

STORYTIME

Did you know that back in the 80s Steve Gerber wrote a comic based on A Nightmare on Elm Street? And that it got cancelled after just 2 issues due to retailers complaining that they couldn't carry something so violent?

Well now you know. And knowing is h- ... I mean, and now we're gonna read it.

Also, isn't it kind of weird how slasher characters have translated to comics so poorly? The Jason and Chucky comics are almost universally shit and, this excluded, the Freddy Krueger comics are mostly even worse. Does anyone know of any other exceptions?

Anyway, let's get to it.

This is...

Freddy Krueger's A Nightmare on Elm Street #1-2

What's the deal with the comic rights anyway? I know DC bought wildstorm but did they also get the Nightmare on Elm Street/Friday the 13th comic rights with them?
>>
>>91930299
Comic adaptation rights usually are acquired in short-term contracts. These are probably no different. The rights have likely been held by a bunch of different companies. I doubt anyone currently has comic book rights to the series given that there are no comics coming out and I don't think there have been in years.

I was going to buy these for Tony DeZuniga's art. Marvel used to publish some good magazine-format stuff.
>>
>>91930299
It would make sense for DC to have the comic rights since Warner Bros now owns Newline Pictures (and I'm pretty sure WB even made the shitty Elm Street remake). Then again, Warner also owns Cartoon Network and DC sure isn't publishing the current comics based on their shows.

Anybody have any of the Child's Play comics from the early 90s? I think there were adaptions of the 2nd and 3rd movies and a short lived series of original stories. Now that I'm a fan of the movies, I'd kinda like to read them and see how they are.

Hellraiser is hit or miss.

The Marvel books are largely INO Hellraiser stuff and VERY hit or miss. Pinhead and the other Cenobites rarely if ever appeared and mostly you had people like Dwayne McDuffie doing random horror shit with Cenobites/Puzzle Boxes tossed in.

Pinhead vs Marshal Law is good but it's largely a continuity band aid Clive Barker helped write that basically explains away why Hellraiser 3 had Pinhead going from neutral evil to chaotic evil.

Boom's books are pretty good if you are a huge stickler for Hellraiser books that actually feature Pinhead and Kristy, but they are heavily pro-Christian (one of the main themes is Pinhead becoming a born again christian) and after the first year, Kristy and Pinhead switch places with Kristy becoming the new Pinhead and Pinhead becoming human again.
>>
>>91930299
Other way around.

DC bought Wildstorm in 1999.

When DC started putting out horror comics based upon Leatherface, Freddy, and Jason, they opted to put them out via Wildstorm because of a couple of reasons:

1. Wildstorm was on it's death bed and giving them the licensed horror books was a way to try and boost their sales to justify keeping Wildstorm going

2. New Line hated DC and basically only agreed to let them do Freddy/Jason/Leatherface comics, if they kept them as far as humanly possible from the DC Universe.

The later is why we never any DC heroes fighting Leatherface/Freddy/Jason. New Line basically would have yanked the license from DC if they even SUGGESTED it.

I've never really understood why people think it's a good idea to use Pinhead as anything other than an antagonist who pops in at the end to torture you, unless you do a character study. But I'm not a Hellraiser fanboy, so...
>>
>>91949589
The appeal he had in the first two movies was that he operated by a set of rules and was open to being reasoned with (in The Hellbound Heart the cenobite with pins was actually a minor character with a girly voice and the lead cenobite was an androgyne). The third movie and beyond decided to ignore those core aspects of his character, and then Barker himself followed suit.

I'd put 6 in with 4. It's not a good movie, or a good Nightmare on Elm Street movie, but it's Robert Englund hamming it up for 90 or so minutes, which is a lot more fun than the ho-hum boredom of 5 (despite its nice artistic direction).

There were a few decent ANoES comics that got storytimed here in the past. Nothing on the level of this comic, but some fun one-offs.

>I've read it and i really don't see how it would work as a hawk man comic

Have you ever read the original origin of Hawkman? It's definitely not hard to see how the backstory could've been a Hawkman pitch originally.

Remember that back when he pitched it there were two different versions of Hawkman: Earth-1 Hawkman was from the planet Thanagar. Earth-2 Hawkman was archeologist Carter Hall who was a reincarnation of murdered Egyptian Prince Khufu. If you go by what's seen in Void Indigo, it looks like Gerber planned to merge the two origins together.

So change the barbarian era in Void Indigo into Ancient Egypt, change Ath'agaar into Prince Khufu, Ren into Shiera, Koth into Hath-Set, and Jhagur into Katar Hol/Carter Hall, and you'd kind of get what he was going for. The only thing is that we don't know how much of it he changed/added because it was no longer a Hawkman pitch (like for instance he obviously didn't use Ancient Egypt)

Funny thing is that there was a Scooby-Doo Team-Up comic recently that did combine the reincarnation and alien origins. I can't recall if that was done in the New 52 or not.
