I remember watching this in the cinema with some friends. The uncomfortable glances we shared during the awful sexual tension between a walking talking beetle and an actual honest to god fucking monkey will never be forgotten.

That is the entire point. Playing the story straight doomed his family and himself, only when Kubo decides to act upon his on destiny on his on way and what he believes in is how he can defeat the villain.

Just watched this the other night and was enjoying it until the Beetle showed up, other than the fights with the sisters and the giant skellington it was all down hill.

Music was great and the animation was amazing, but when the story just fails like this did it's a shame. It felt like wasted potential. Almost like someone had a vision, scripted the first part and a few notes later, then died and was replaced by a hack to tie it together.
