Hey Tex.

So, last night we were talking about how Odyssey of the Amazons was a disappointing waste of time. Any ideas on how you'd improve it?

There's of course the obvious stuff like giving the characters some goddamn personality, and cutting out that utterly pointless and annoying narration, but like, aside from that.

The one character that really shone in it was the one who was an artist instead of a warrior, because because it helped further the idea that Amazons in DC are not just female Spartans, they're essentially a giant fantasy women's shelter.

That's what the ads made it sound like, in fact. The pre-release material made it out to be the adventures of a bunch of Amazons traveling the world, solving mysteries, and despensing old world justice to rapists and wife beaters. For whatever reason, we instead got some utterly pedestrian rescue mission stretched out to six issues.

Decompression strikes again. Should've been a series of stand alone adventures with loose connective tissue.

Ironic considering that the combat action seems to be the focus of the book, the action is completely boring because it's just them effortlessly mowing down faceless generic bad guys.

Even with how powerful the Amazons are, anything more than a dozen mooks should be a threat to their group.

Honestly except for the uber violent nature of Cheetah, since Perez she's kinda had the same role as Circe-- ultra confident bad bitch that fucks with Diana. Which is great still, and I never would have had any problem with it had Rebirth Cheetah not been so damn good of a step up.

I dunno, Tex. Nearly every time man hate comes up, it nearly always spirals out of control into strawman caricature.

Which especially stupid since their back story with Hercules frankly gives them perfectly good reason to be distrustful of men. And yet, the Amazons are more often than not treated as the bad guys. Need I remind anyone of the Finch run, where they went full KILL ALL PENISES, or even, ugh, Amazons Attack?

It'd be nice to see some characters overcome their own sexism, but writers have continually proven they can't do it without being stupid.

I don't mean for it to be a revenge fantasy kind of thing, and like you say it's pretty difficult to skirt the line between something that seems real and strawman.

Like the awful Spirit of Truth with the Muslim strawmen.

Something I felt kind of weird about in Perez is that Heracles eventually comes and reconciles with the Amazons and is totally forgiven. He's demonstrated as fully reformed and all, but Hippolyta even starts crushing on him again, and finally Heracles chooses ascending to Olympus over getting to live in Paradise banging Hippolyta for eternity, to show that he is redeemed.

I don't wanna get into overanalyzing implications but I just didn't get what the point was. Maybe it was to be the start of their reintegration into Man's World that came a few arcs later?

An issue for each of the main Amazons would have been pretty cool-- Phillipus, Menallipe, Antiope, Hippolyta, maybe bring back Io, and maybe Artemis. A mix of stories set before they went to Themyscira and some set on Themyscira or in modern times. Like Antiope's one would explore her whole history.

Remember those bonus books I posted each focusing on a specific Amazon? That's what I'm envisioning.

Though at that point it would be so far from the Odyssey pitch to be something entirely different anyway.

Hardly a bad thing. The Amazon supporting characters could use a boost. It always seems like they aren't as important as they should be in any given arc, can't really articulate why.

Plus, people keep bitching about a lack of a consistent supporting cast, so having some one shots focusing on the more well known Amazons is frankly a wise idea.

War of the Gods DOES have something I really like involving the Amazons: only a couple of the Amazons that went with Hippolyta to Man's World were actual dedicated warriors, so only Phillipus and her crew were able to fight adequately, while you had some other Amazons that were just running around like chickens with their heads cut off because they didn't want to fight.

One of them picks up an Uzi and tries to defend herself with it and is so shocked by the kick and firepower that she just throws it away and runs off.

Goerge Perez handling of Heracles in his run never made any sense for me as well. Too many weird implications there.

For example i never understood why Perez (along with John Byrne) had Wonder Woman crushing hard on Superman after seeing him for brief minutes during the Legends cross-over arc. She even accepted to go on an arranged date with him in some secluded location.

You'd think that Wonder Woman'd see Superman as an obvious Herakles parallel: extremely powerful and famous hero who's also charming. Not that i'm calling Superman rapist or anything, but shouldn't she be a bit weary of him? Little bit conflicted about the idea of going on a blind-date with this stranger despite his fame?

But nope, instead she's there on this date and comparing him to Olympian gods while being somewhat peeved by his humbleness and insecurities.

That's interesting vs. the not-Spartans approach because if you DO write them as not-Spartans you can't really ignore that Sparta inculcated its culture from early childhood and was brutal in doing so. In a way that went beyond its own society in more ways than just wars: look at like the Krypteia.

I'm not saying the date per see was badly written, although seeing Wonder Woman gushing about Superman's powers will always feel weird to me.

What bothered me was the set-up with Wonder Woman admitting having wet-dreams with Superman after seeing for brief moments during major crises and accepting to go on a blind date without any kind of internal conflict. You'd think she at least give pause and think about Herakles example.

Talking about Herakles, remember when John Byrne tried to set up a sorta of romance between her and Herakles-turned Champion?

The original, mythological Amazons were indeed just female Spartans, and the Amazons of Bana-Mighdall embody that aspect of the myth. Their patron was Ares instead of Gaea and Hera.

Marston very specifically wanted to turn the whole myth on its head with the Amazons instead being peaceful, democratic people.

Marston was kind of obsessed with the idea of female superiority, which made it weird in the 80's when feminism was changing radically towards the idea that men and women were the same and equal. Marston believed women embodied traits of peace, love, tenderness, all that stuff and those were inherent to women.

So that's part of why, I think, you've had this movement of Wonder Woman to being a warrior. There's less of what would be seen as a sexist implication.

>>91847902
I agree

>>91848005
Yep, and the Bana-Mighdallians were all integrating into the rest of the Amazons at the time, so it kind of makes sense to have more warrior-born types. My headcanon is just that we're not seeing any of the non-violent Amazons at the moment because they don't wanna get rekt.

I guess it is mostly because I had no idea about the levels of hype or interest in the title. I was not around on /co/ when it was announced, and honestly forgot that it was even coming out. The first issue came out at the end of 2015, and there is still one issue to go, so I forgot about it. Seeing it re-appear at #2 in March (losing to that overpriced Spiderman issue) was a bit of a surprise.

Well, Perez and Byrne were rebooting Wonder Woman and Superman respectively, so i guess they thought that the idea of the pairing would obviously pop up any time and decided to partner up to get that obstacle away from their way as quickly as possible.

But yeah, there was hardly any build up. Superman's reasoning i understood. He thought that WW could be someone he could date freely without the headache of the drama of secret identities and hiding superpowers. But Wonder Woman's reasoning made no sense to me given the amazon's history and her inexperience.

Maybe he'd retcon the gods in Azz's run to be Roman gods and merge them with the Greek versions like Perez did?

I'm fairly certain Circe would have to have a large amount to do with all the fuckery going on.

>That could end up being a clusterfuck if the next longterm writer isn't on the same page as Rucka.

It's already a clusterfuck. You've Dan Abnett using the Finches' origin for Donna Troy as a plot-point, Francis Manapul using the 'New 52' incarnation of Circe, Bryan Hitch constantly referencing the fact that Diana's Zeus' bastard child and so many other discrepancies.

So Rucka better tie everything neatly and give his editors some sort of bible.

I hope it's this, and not just because Circe is my evilfu. It just makes sense that she would be behind all this since 1) arches gonna arch, and 2) why would you bother having her show up in The Truth if she wasn't going to have anything to do with The Lies? Basic conservation of detail.

Ares is locked up somewhere, leaving Circe the only character with the ability to pull it off, and with the motivation to do it.

Yep, I just don't get why they did that. Like, why does it seem to be so difficult to just NOT make things complicated? All you have to do is not do anything!

I think it really is best to assume the 52 explanation. Donna is a living anomaly who technically exists in all points of space and time. Fixes everything.

Instead of getting a headache and trying to figure out which of her million origins is the right one, I'm going with the fuck it option and seeing it as a feature, not a bug.

Or at the very least, we can stop harping on this single aspect of her character and just let her do superhero shit.

Donna's official origin should just be "it's just a comic, I should really just relax".
>>
>>91849530

>I'm predicting that's a bit of a fakeout

Eh. I don't think so. Abnett will probably use the excuse that Wally and Donna are two people are confused about their past and sad about what a clusterfuck their lives currently is to set them up together as a couple. Then you'll have Roy going REEEEEEEE with jealousy until Wally come to grips that the woman he loves is Linda although sex with Donna definitely felt great.

Donna then will be left alone like always collecting the pieces of her fucked up love life.

You know what would have been nice? Instead of garbage fires like Odyssey and Grounded, if right before New 52 we had gotten "endings" for the pre-Flashpoint characters like pre-Crisis Superman and Earth-One Batman and Wonder Woman got.

That's what I had wanted out of Convergence, too.

But as we know New 52 was kind of shoved on everyone at the last minute.

Have you ever seen a tabloid cover? They claim EVERYTHING helps you lose weight, but also gives you cancer.
>>
My main problem with Dan Abnett's run is that he's just redoing old plots. The first arc with Abracadabra came straight from Mark Waid's The Flash run. The whole current mess with Donna's messy origin and romance with Wally come from John Byrne's Dark Angel Saga where Wally recreated Donna based from his memories. You even had the whole love triangle since Donna felt that Wally recreated her with this saintly image because he always placed her on a pedestal so then she went and sexed Roy again to show him was a flawed human she was. Not to mention the Judas Contract redoo cross-over we're bound to.

Flash at that time was just the writers throwing shit at the walls, they just had no fucking idea what they were doing to the point they basically admitted later that they didn't give a shit until they started watching the show and then just tried to copy the show.
