yo but where's Rasputin tho
>>
>>91811218
Not in the show, because they've made the show historically plausible, which included removing supernatural elements.
>>
>>91811283
well then what's the point
>>
That new song sounds pretty ass. Still a great OST, hope they didn't cut out too many songs.

Also, is St. Petersburg really that gloomy and bleak?
>>
>>91811327
To tell an interesting, dramatic historical "what if" story using lush music and costumes. That doesn't require including a ridiculous caricature of Rasputin who is also an undead wizard controlling an army of glowing green demon bats.
>>
>>91811378
Listen, im fine with all that, but if they got rid of "in the dark of the night" there is no point.
>>
>>91811366
I prefer the Hartford version of "Land of Yesterday," the Broadway version is too expositional about the exiled Russians compared to Hartford, where it was a fun, silly, wild bring down the house number with lyrics about their new life thrown in for good measure.

The only song cut is In the Dark of the Night for obvious reasons. They still use the melody from In the Dark of the Night at various points in the show, including a melancholic new song that is probably going to be the one people consider the best of all the new numbers.
>>
>>91811403
Why would they include a song that clashes with the rest of the music and has no place considering there's no character who would sing it?

Because it's good and maybe they could finally do it justice without a bunch of animated crap flying around and ruining the mood?
>>
Looks good, musicals about Russia are always interesting
>>
>>91811526
But again, there's no place for the song in the show. No character who would sing it, and no moment where it would work. Why would they include it when it would serve no purpose? They can't do it justice when it doesn't belong in the story.
>>
Saw the preview production bootleg, hopefully we get a Broadway one soon.

I wonder how much of the show's book will have changed because of the lawsuit. I hope they kept the line about smoking in her presence.

Gay as fuck.

Did they at LEAST relocate Tsarina Dagmar to Denmark where she's supposed to be then? That change always made my autism act up.
>>
>>91811936
Rasputin's portrayal didn't trigger your autism?
>>
>>91811994

No, because it was soooo far out there that there was basically no connection to the real thing.

Meanwhile moving the Tsarina to Paris serves no point other than misinforming the audience about the actual history, all because the writers were scared the brain of the average audience member might explode if exposed to the name of a European city they hadn't heard of before.

>remove literally the only good thing about the entire movie
Why even bother to use the movie as source then ?
>>
>>91811283
So they made it even more of a generic barebones princess story by removing any magical elements and the only fun character.
Who are they trying to appeal to here ? I love my russian history but there's none of it in Anastasia. And the few people that like the movie mostly like it for the animation and Rasputin.
I simply don't see the point to this.

>Anastasia on Broadway, based on Don Bluth's animated film, opens tonight!
>Proceeds to explain how the broadway version cuts the antagonist and the most recognizable song from the film.

Just say it's a new product entirely at that point, then. It's more loosely tied to the Don Bluth original than nuPPG is tied to PPG.
>>
>>91814624
Including the children?
>>
>>91814631
it's still based on the Don Bluth film.
>>
>>91814631
I've never really understood this line of reasoning. All "based on" adaptations change things, sometimes significantly. The 1997 Bluth film is still considered "based on" the 1956 live action film (and the 1952 play) despite some serious changes. The Broadway version of Aladdin is still considered "based on" the Disney Aladdin film despite some serious changes. And the new musical doesn't really have that many significant changes minus removing the supernatural element. Almost all of the story beats are the same, the details are just changed in certain cases to be more historically plausible.

For instance: in the film, Anya/Dimitri/Vlad have to jump off the train because the demon bats sent by Rasputin are hunting them down. In the new show, they have to jump off the train because it's been stopped by the police and people with forged papers (so, everyone, since the train is full of fleeing aristocrats and intellectuals) are being taken off and shot.

Or, in the film, Anya has a nightmare about her family because of Rasputin's demon bats. In the show, Anya has a nightmare about her family because she survived but can't quite remember the traumatic execution at Ipatiev, and the trauma gives her nightmares.
>>
>>91810514

same for ballet. I wish we had a /performing arts/ board.

Speaking of ballet, I'm glad they kept the Swan Lake turns in "Quartet at the Ballet" as per the footage in the OP. I heard they moved them to a different spot in the song though because the applause from the audience was drowning out the next verse.

If anyone wants to hear the song that incorporates a melody from In the Dark of the Night, the show (for some reason) uploaded a soundboard of it a few months ago from the Connecticut production: https://vimeo.com/channels/939796/188033071

Melody starts at about :45. The song is sung by former aristocrats/intellectuals and other people fleeing Russia at the train station, including Anya, Dimitri and Vlad.

I'm guessing they didn't mean for people to hear these since they're technically private videos but, eh.
>>
So it's basically a "realistic" reboot of the movie?

Fucking JUNE?
What were they thinking.
Most shows of this season have already released it.
>>
>>91818886
Eh, to be fair about 2 months out from the show's opening is the norm. Dear Evan Hansen opened in December and the recording came out in February. Groundhog Day is unusual in that it came out, what, a week after opening?

Also, the show is currently undergoing a lawsuit so the producers may have been wary about spending the money to record until they were sure the show was selling well.

>John F. Kennedy had “Camelot.” Barack H. Obama had “Hamilton.” Only 100 days into his presidency, Donald J. Trump already has his own Broadway musical. “Anastasia” opened Monday at the Broadhurst Theatre, and it’s a show that pays homage to the kleptocracy that was the Romanovs of Russia. How could our president not be thrilled?

>Early in the show, a Jared Kushner lookalike sings of the glories of his pre-Communist nation in the song “My Petersburg,” even though the place has been renamed Leningrad. Later, the Ivanka Trump-like heroine shows her royal privilege by insisting that a fellow traveler ask her permission to smoke on the train ride from the U.S.S.R. to the West. Remember, this is 1927.

Someone should make a musical about Stalin.

First act the main character is just Joseph and his wife Ketevan just trying to get by on Imperial Russia.
It's a very sappy first act about love and whatnot. Then Ketevan dies and Joseph sings: "This creature softened my heart of stone. She died and with her died my last warm feelings for humanity" while his friends say something about how Stalin looked changed after that day.
Act 2 with a recap of Stalin's rise to power, world war 2 and him ordering some purge.

I think he's trying to say that... people smoked? I don't know.

The point of the scene is that it's one of those moments where Anya suddenly shows flashes of being a grand duchess, since you would not smoke in front of royalty without permission. It's actually a direct reference to the Yul Brynner film.

>historically plausible.

if they're going that route why not take it to the fullest. cut out the singing and dancing and just have the entire play be Anastasia huddling in a corner screaming while soviets stand over her body and bayonet her a couple of dozen times. it can end with her being tossed into a ditch with her family and being set on fire..

Actually, no, it would be a bunch of Russian criminals stabbing and shooting them for hours. The Romanovs kept jewelry in their clothing so no one could be killed cleanly. They also wanted to fuck up the corpses so that no one used their bodies as symbols.

Rasputin was real and he was pretty bonkers. If Alan Moore can do snake god stuff, do can Rasputin
>>
>>91825286
Because they are still telling the "what if Anastasia survived?" story, they are just telling it in a more dramatically mature and historically plausible way. There are vast gulfs between "a historical 'what if' drama" and the real murders.

>>91825341
>for hours

No. It took about 25 minutes. Which is still an eternity in terms of execution. And Anastasia and Maria were still alive when the bodies were brought outside. They regained consciousness and starting screaming, so they were stabbed some more and then eventually had their faces bashed in with the butt end of a rifle. Anastasia died choking on her own blood and teeth.

I wonder if the Ivanka references would be kept in if they hadn't changed the outfit just a few days ago. It used to be a pink dress (pic related), then they changed it to this white blazer and skirt number (it's in the video footage) that looks more like something out of a country club. It actually reminds me of Galinda's white dress in Act I of Wicked, so maybe people are associating it with that snootiness?

Damn good. Can't think of any stage show that genuinely got to more people, when the lights come down people were actually screaming. The music's pretty good too, but unlike Evita the original recording sort of pales in comparison to later performances.

A lot of people blamed Rasputin over incompetence of the Tsarist regime because of his unnecessary influence on the Tsar's wife. Placing the actual revolutionaries as the enemy would imply that Tsarism was not perfect, as the revolutionaries blamed society's social ills on the Tsarist system, so they placed all the blame on some pseudo-adviser occultist that held more power then he needed to have, rather then well, the failure of Tsarism.

The reason why the Russian Revolution happened wasn't because of Communism's utopian tendencies, but that both the Tsarist and Provisional Government were not competent enough to handle the tasks necessary to ensure society wouldn't just fall apart given the precarious situation Tsarist Russia had placed itself in WWI.

Severely fucking underrated. I really think it's because it's Andrew Jackson. They could rewrite Hamilton the way they did, but Andrew Jackson's a harder sell for a theatre-going crowd.
>>
>>91811283
Rasputin and Bartok were there because they needed to make it more like a Disney animated film of the '90s, which meant having a supernatural villain and an animal sidekick.

Without those elements the movie would have been too much like a conventional Broadway musical, and would have flopped with kids.

But being too much like a conventional Broadway musical is more helpful in an actual Broadway musical.
>>
>>91842076
I'd rather have hokey. I hate the trend in musicals nowadays where they try to make every single number a showstopper.
>>

>/performing arts/

I remember way back there was a great set of theater threads on /tv/ when I still went there, lots of people theorized about something like that. Who knows, maybe under Hiroshima it can happen. But sadly, I think this is right.

>>91817837
>I wish there was but it would probably be slower than /po/

Anyhow, since I never got to really talk about it on /mu/, I might as well here. What did you guys think about Lazarus? Anyone see it? I'm a huge fucking fan of Bowie and love the movie it's based on, but I heard mixed reviews of the musical. I like the track list, but I feel like the way they delivered it was a little too cleaned up, at least on the cast album.

A glowing review from the Hartford Courant, which gave it a mixed-to-negative review when it opened in Hartford for preivews last year

http://www.courant.com/entertainment/arts-theater/hc-review-anastasia-broadway-20170424-story.html

>What matters most is that "Anastasia" has found its truest self. It is assured, it is lyrical, it is melodic, it is beautiful, it is dashing, it is moving and it is charming. It has no need for snark, irony or talking bats. It is off on a great adventure, and it was Hartford that pointed it in the right direction.

>>
>>91855886
>Apparently the musical bootleg community is very...secretive?

Yeah, it can be. Being too open can be trouble. For instance, the first person to release an audio bootleg of Anastasia posted it on their normal tumblr account which had their picture and name, and someone from the production team used that information to find out who they were, where they sat, and contacted them via the email they used to buy the tickets to threaten them to take it down.

I don't mind the secrecy, but I dislike the people who aren't willing to share/trade except for extremely high standards.

Have you checked out stagedork? They have one Lion King but no TLM, unfortunately.
