Yeah, they began 2 when only 1 episode had aired and were halfway through it by the time 1 ended.

Don't have to be in the audience to know they suck. I'd bet some of the people on the crew/maybe Nefcy herself hated forcing them into stories and so decided to do away with them as soon as they could.

If I had to guess, I'd say they were conceptualized quickly as Marco's friends by one of the people responsible for helping her develop the show for television. Nefcy probably wasn't particularly attached to them, the way she would've been with Star/Marco, they largely didn't add anything to the episodes they were in, their character concepts themselves didn't offer potential plotlines (regardless of how you feel about Jackie, "Marco's crush since kindergarten" at least provided enough material for a continuing storyline).

So when Nefcy was the only one in charge, she and the crew probably either decided to axe them or cared so little about them/didn't see the need to include them that it was several episodes before they even noticed and decided to keep it that way.

Season 2 as a whole did a great job of fixing problems with the show.

That's what I trying to get at with the "developed for television" mention. There were two "co-executive producers" on the first season who helped with that and then left halfway through.

They probably came up with those characters (I doubt Nefcy did since I've never seen her draw them like she has Ludo, Jackie, Oskar, etc.), some of the writers of that season wrote them into a few plots, and when Nefcy and others saw they didn't work and no longer had any obligation to use them since Nefcy would've been the only exec them, just stopped.

It takes a few episodes to really realize a character doesn't work, probably, if their concept in itself isn't terrible ("Marco's guy friend" could've been okay). But once an episode is past storyboards and recording and everything, it has to go on TV to meet the deadline even if those characters turn out to suck.

Yeah, a lot of the crew has remained consistent in a larger sense but when it comes to storyboarders the majority of them in 2 were totally new, and an actual writing team formed rather than just different staff writers taking on different episodes.

So in that sense it's not really surprising the writing got better when most of the people responsible for that aspect are different, and the better writers/boarders got more control.

I really feel like the main reason he had so few lines in both of his 2 appearances this season was so they could avoid having the press releases list Hall appearing and thus spoil Toffee being alive before the episodes even aired, not LOL NO MONEY

I think it largely has to do with self insert, at least at first. Jackie, though only going through minimal development, gradually went from being a distant friend to someone who was pretty good at reassuring Marco that his spaghetti isn't the end of the world. The idea of a cool girlfriend who is fun and still holds that understanding is appealing to many.

And of course, the other side is the fun in seeing how they'll break her. Collected characters like her can be mildly entertaining in their own right but they're built largely on how they react to other people. If starcrushed is any indication, a big enough reaction out of her might bring about something big.
