Corte Sconta is my favorite, although it's been a while since I've last read Ballad of the Salt Sea. Probably because I like the setting and the whole "One last glorious charge" theme a bit more.

On an unrelated note, I've just finished the Incal, and I'm a tinge let down. While I love the art and some of the imagery, I wasn't really fond of how the story keeps having these supposedly important characters pop out of nowhere, be built up, but then not really do anything. I'm thinking of picking up Arzac next, but how close is the writing style to the Incal?

I'm at least able to enjoy the Fletcher Hanks stuff as the oddball efforts of a madman, but Corto Maltese is about on the same level storytelling wise.

Crude artwork?! Whilst Pratt may not have the most refined drawing style his grasp of figure drawing, composition, page design, motion, action etc are second to none. You know how many other great cartoonists he's either influenced directly by teaching or indirectly through studying his comics?
