>Welcome to Donald Trump's America

Jeez, it's not like working/earning money in the US (loosely defined) without paying taxes has resulted in not being allowed in before Trump.
>>
>>91719405
>The reasons for denying her entry into the US were down to the incomplete commissioned sketches she had in the car. Working on them while in the country would be considered working in the USA.
Look, I hate Canada as much as the next guy, but that's some bullshit right there.

Yes. And a handful of covers for Marvel.

This is retarded but also absolutely not a new occurrence. You'd be denied entry a decade ago if you said you were going to do PAID WORK.

Why would people be turned away for wanting to work in America?

Let them compete with the native citizens, the one who works harder, is more qualified, and is willing to work for less pay will get the job

That's the free market. That's capitalism. I thought Americans believed that competition breeds excellence?

Hey, lets list all the countries that will let you come in on a temporary basis and allow you to work for pay without a work permit!

I'll start:

>...
>>
>>91719405

Countries can get really absurd about entry rules and doing "work" on a tourist visa. Not too long ago, Canada barred a British man from returning to the country because he'd traveled there to help his girlfriend (who was moving to Britain to live with him) pack and clean up the place she was leaving - they interrogated him because his brief stay aroused suspicions of drug smuggling and when they found out he'd helped replaster a bathroom or some such, well, they threw the book at him. People have been expelled from countries because they babysat for relatives while visiting. It's really a bunch of nonsense.
>>
>>91719823
>I thought Americans believed that competition breeds excellence?
Fuck no, we believe that winners are chosen by god to be successful and that everyone else is expected to support the winner because america loves a winner.
>>
>>91719823
>Why would people be turned away for wanting to work in America?
okay so under capitalism, when a company goes bankrupt it just dies, because their operation means failed to be lucrative
in america, they instead get a government bailout, which is anticapitalism and stimulates the growth of more such parasites
>>

The letter of the law is rarely followed, because it's usually retarded and overly strict. Officials have a lot of leeway to use their judgement, and are expected to in most cases.

That's idiotic.

If I go to X country, but my accounts back at home are accumulating interest, does that mean I've made money in a foreign country?

If I'm on a trip to Europe and I get a call from a business partner about a product (and advise him on it) should I be deported? I clearly worked, and I'll likely have my income increased from the decision.

If I'm sitting in a restaurant in Japan and I doodle a sketch that I years later turn into a logo for my company, did I break the law?

No US resources are being utilized. Nor is she bypassing US tax codes. The law is designed to respond to those concerns, but is heavy handed and overreaching in this application.
>>
>>91720261
Because she doesn't have a work visa. How is this hard to understand?
>>
>>91720258
Needlessly enforcing draconian standards does not make for a strong border security. Two unfinished sketches are not grounds to refuse entry.

At refusing entry for two unifnished sketches.
>>
>>91720284
>If I go to X country, but my accounts back at home are accumulating interest, does that mean I've made money in a foreign country?
You're making your money in your home country, not country X

>If I'm on a trip to Europe and I get a call from a business partner about a product (and advise him on it) should I be deported? I clearly worked, and I'll likely have my income increased from the decision.
Is your money coming from Europe, or wherever you're from? That's all it's really comes down to.

>If I'm sitting in a restaurant in Japan and I doodle a sketch that I years later turn into a logo for my company, did I break the law?
Did you sell the sketch while you were in Japan? Yes, you're doing work in Japan, you'd be needing a Japanese work visa. No, your temporary holiday or whatever visa you were using is fine.

If you're being paid in USbux, you will need a work permit if you want to do it legally. Everyone's been getting away with it because no one's been saying
>I'm coming here to sell these and make money
She just fucked up, it's that simple
>>
>>91719405

Well this is new

When did Trump start blocking Canada

This doesn't sound good though

If trump is blocking entry for an artist then that means the US is already slowing starting its mad decent into 1984
>>
It doesn't matter what the work was, it boils down to this:

>Providing a service in exchange for goods or currency

Working on those drawings to finish the commission was providing a paid service and thus broke the law.

>>91720349
Then depending upon where you are you likely should try to keep it a secret from the local revenue services.

>>91720360
What about photographs? Can a professional photographer do his work without a permit?

>>91720373
>Well this is new

It is not new at all, you have had work permit laws for almost a hundred years. God dammit.
>>
>>91720373
Canada is a disgrace now according to Trump due to milk.
>>
>>91720284
If you go to X nation while having citizenship in Y country. Then revive money in X nation, even if you started it in Y country. Then yes, that's making money in foreign country.

If you're doing business back home while abroad its different. You're not working in said country, doing business there, getting money for said business. You're advising on a product for a company. You don't get deported for that.

If you make a doodle in Japan then later turn it into a logo. No you're not doing work in Japan. If you sell that design or get paid for it, then you're doing work in Japan.
>>
>>91720184
Which isn't what happened.

>>
>>91719794
Why are you faggots so obsessed with his taxes? No law states that he has to show them.
>>
>>91720426
The problem wasn't her visiting the con, it was the technicality of her completing a paid commission there.

If she'd said it was personal artwork she'd have gotten away clean with it, she drew the loophole closed around her own damn neck.
>>
>>91720087
This, no one is entitled to enter countries as they please. Why do people act like its a human right?
>>
>>91720439
Because he's constantly saying that he will show his taxes. It would've been so much easier for him to say no I'm not then it is to keep lying about it.
>>

However, there are laws that state he can't utilize the power of the office to enrich himself.

Releasing taxes is a long held tradition to prove that such an event isn't occurring. At the moment, no one knows all of his holdings, debts, or general financial structure.

Also, he said he would show them and then lied about the reason he can't (taxes can be released under audit, prior presidents have done it)

The entire developed world has had work permit laws for decades, how the fuck can you blame that on trump?
>>
Here's the thing, there is no work visa that covers coming to the country for short conventions or trade shows.

If you have an ESTA to get into the US, you're allowed into the country to do business (e.g. attend meetings, look for clients) and to bring "samples" in order to generate business for when you go back home. International cartoonists don't want to break the law doing conventions, they want to do it right and legally, but as far as I can tell (and I've looked into it, because I've tried to do US cons before) there isn't any system in place that allows that. You can go into the import/export system for bringing your stock with you and declaring it properly and paying duty on it, but that doesn't cover you selling the stock at your table either.

The Canadian side will hold you up for just as odd reasons as the US side will. The Canada side held me up once because I was crossing the border at 3am at a non-major crossing station. I explained I was driving to see friends who were getting married, explain where they were, and so forth. I sat there for 2+ hours as they went all over my car and through my things. It was routine post-911.

On the US side coming back once I was held up (mine you I have a US id, US plates on the car, etc) and given a 15min interrogation over my destination? The issue? I didn't have a passport with me (which was well before it became a needed item to cross into Canada or Mexico years later.) I told them my destination city and state, which during the "conversation" they would keep changing as they asked me questions attempting to trip me up. It's just how the border patrol is trying to see what will spook.

But if anything was a flag, it was two pills she couldn't id in her wallet and then panicked. Further more "knowing" what they are later didn't help the matter as now it looked like she was trying to cover something up. The art is just for questioning, not an actual reason she was turned away. In her panic she looked squirrely and that follows an incident yesterday in Paris.

Fucking back up, drive to another border crossing and politely try again without freaking out.

Not sure about that. IDW, maybe, if that's who she was tabling with/for. The vendors buy table/floor space from the con, what they sell and the taxes paid on their earnings are down to the vendors, not the con organisers.

>Her work was NOT con related, It was private work that she intended to do.

This is just the border people being assholes, honestly. A businessman bringing a laptop with him on a work trip and doing work on there would be the same, then. Were they paid for in advance? If they weren't yet paid for and she was collecting the money for them at the convention, then you'd have a point.

>B-1 Status
>The B-1 status is for Canadian citizens coming to the U.S. to engage in business. Examples including traveling to the U.S. to consult with business associates; to attend a scientific, educational, professional or business convention; to settle an estate; or to negotiate a contract. You can certainly come down to the U.S. for your job with a Canadian employer. The best way to think about it is that you can come to the U.S. to conduct business, but you should not be employed by a U.S. company, or take a wage/salary while you are down here. If you do, then a B-1 status may not apply and you should consider an L-1 visa, O-1 visa, TN visa , or H-1B visa.

The economy works best when taking into account reality, not some imagined perfect world.

In reality the US has a serious education problem and without immigrants the resulting brain drain would kill our economy.
>>
>>91719823
Capitalism worked until mega corporations sprung up and lobbied to make the laws strictly anti-capitalist.

The left complains about how capitalism is ruining America but remember that starting out Ford scouted the best talent and offered them benefits no company wanted to compete with. He even brought in 100s of Mexicans as part of an educational program and strongly believed that once racism and bigotry ended, the world would be united in a singular technological goal.

Then he died and his board members swiftly pissed on his legacy.
>>

Maybe because college degrees don't mean shit now that they're basically diploma 2.0? Maybe if the US economy didn't outsource all it's blue collar work?

But no, keep importing Indian doctors who live there for a decade, send all their money home, and then leave.

>>
>>91722151
there's a difference between capitalist and free-market

the free market also has no protections against the accumulation of power - a market must be regulated to prevent things like monopolies, price fixing (both in terms of product cost and wages), etc.

There are also many systems that simply don't operate efficiently as private enterprise due to the conflict of interest between the system itself and profit-motive. Education, health care, utilities, essential services that should be provided to every citizen that are not scarce enough to require currency as a method of controlling distribution.

Privatized Health care and Education in particular are extremely damaging to our country - they are the two largest sources of debt in the country and have suffered insane inflation as a result of profit motive combined with the very visible need for the services.
>>

>>
One of the biggest issues is business and corporation owners, and nobody up high seems to want to address it.

The system that's set in place drives you to get the best possible deal for your money, which usually means hiring the cheapest workers you can find.

Then you have actual people, not some systematic set of principles, yelling at you that you have to hire American. Why would you choose to spend more money than you have to?

Some people yell about the big, mean government interfering with business through regulation, but what fucking choice is there? Let corporations regulate themselves? That's like putting a fox in charge of a henhouse.

I guarantee that if Trump had showed his taxes during the campaign it would have shut down his chances of becoming president, even against a horribly unpopular candidate like Hillary.

In 'Murrica it is.

IIRC they're payed by the government on a per-prisoner basis, so they're incentivized to take as many prisoners as possible in the worst conditions legally allowed. US Prisoners are also "allowed" to work for less than minimum wage.

There've been a couple scandals already where private prisons were giving judges kickbacks for harsher sentencing. It's pretty horrifying.
>>
>>91722298
I doubt there's any reliable data to back that up, especially considering liberals have been trying to pull the "b-but they do the jobs white people don't want to do (for absurdly low wages) ;_;" to support it.

The Middle East. While everyone accuses the US of being oil grubbing war mongers, they conveniently ignore Canada that regularly bombs the fuck out of anything that compromises their oil acquisitions. It pisses them off.

That's why we need a guaranteed basic income that the government pays out to citizens. Because there's simply just not going to be enough jobs to go around in the near future. It's already bad but it's only going to get worse. Everyone should get a basic income - whether you're unemployed or you make $1,000,000 a year.

Labor is no longer going to be a valuable commodity in the future so we have to rethink how we allow people to maintain a decent standard of living without being able to work. Otherwise we're going to have a horrifying poverty crisis on our hands.

Unfortunately I think the elites would rather people who aren't "valuable" die out and thin out the population because such a dramatic overhaul of our paradigm or how we conduct things is nearly impossible to do. But nobody will admit that.

>Explain to me how automation will outpace EVERY industry?
Manufacturing should be obvious, we're already there. Even smaller scale manufacturing or things like boxing and sorting can easily be automated. General-purpose AI-based automation is on the cusp of financial viability as well, meaning a business could buy a bulk order of general-purpose bots and reassign them as necessary.

My main work at the moment is removing humans entirely from consumer-to-business communication, which also happens to be one of the last bastions of low-skill human labor. That's not just call centers, mind you, I got bitched out by a concierge at one of our trials because when we implemented the system his job basically evaporated.

As time goes on the specialization a person needs to have a job is only going to increase at a dramatic or exponential rate. In a perfect world this would be coupled with a massive reduction in work ours and a universal basic income, but knowing people we'll just end up with an ultra-rich over class and a massive underclass of the poor and unemployed.

Previous innovations in technology removed old jobs and created new jobs, this much is true.

Technological revolutions do create new jobs but they never create as many as they replace, otherwise it is no revolution at all.

It wasn't a problem until now because during the industrial revolution we were nowhere near population saturation, not geographically but financially and industrially.

These days? It's a problem. A growing one.

Can't halt technological progress.
Can't halt the EXPLODING human population.
Can't deny people the life they want.

True story: I went in for a simple endoscopy, hospital had my plan info, scheduled well in advance. After I wake up they tell me that, oops!, the only anesthesiologist they had on hand to administer the propofol was actually off-plan so now I owe the hospital thousands of dollars.

Luckily I have a good job and being a shut-in means I had a large rainy-day fund so I avoided winding up with horrible medical debts, but if you think I'd rather lose all that money than wait for a month or two you're fucking mental.

kek
>>
>>91724072
>>91723994
Pretty much this. Nobody has really given a compelling argument as to how we solve this crisis short of having some sort of global disaster that thins out half of our population.

"We'll figure it out because we always have" is not very reassuring. I know for a fact that once automation becomes cheaper than hiring a human for the job, it'll become the norm and we'll see automation crop up in places we haven't even imagined because someone will get the idea that they can save costs there too. The idea that automation will replace our mental jobs should be a disturbing notion to anyone. What would we have left after that point? Art? Entertainment?

The numbers just don't add up. There's too many people and not enough pie to go around.
>>
>>91724348
You see, when a woman cheats on a man with another man, it's not really her fault: the error comes from the man who wasn't good enough to hold her, and the man who took advantage and helped her cheat.

If she's cheating on her with a woman it's not - really - cheating because it's just two girls having fun and the man isn't being replaced as he fulfills another, lesser, role.

Again: not talking about holistic socialism. Talking about democratic socialist management of specific industries.

Socialized education has been the norm forever.
Socialized medicine works quite well and has the added bonus of not putting half your country in massive debt and therefore crippling the economy

If you're advocating a form of government without socialism in it you're asking for either fascism or libertarianism. One relies on the perfect competence and goodness of a single individual and the other relies on the perfect competence and goodness of ALL individuals which makes them both retarded forms of governance.
