What are some comics that make you feel like you're being watched?
>>
That's kind of an interesting question. Comics are so reliant on you being the watcher in a way, like films.

I feel like films normally give you a freakout or make you paranoid about being watched by either 1. making you really project on someone/something in the film that's being watched or 2. setting up a scene/camera like a window so when something appears it's like you're being seen rather than the other way around.

You can kinda see that in your image with the telescope. I dunno if I know what other comics produce this effect though.

I think part of it is setting up a sense of solitude and lack of information that forces you, as a reader, to put more of your attention and thus yourself into the story. Then when you're met with something invasive, still image, but invasive and surprising, it puts you on edge.

I think it's also the fact that at any point you can just stop participating in reading, unlike a movie. So you still have the mindset without any sort of psychological signal that you're safe.

>>91656775
That's true. You can imagine like multiple dark pages breaking to a reveal and that is kind of a visual reveal/IT SEES YOU even in a comic book.

I think visual surprise is really interesting in comics because it plays so much into the construction of pages and panels, and it's different in physical and digital.

I think the position of the reveal would affect the surprise. Maybe a double-page spread with a monster hidden in the bottom-left corner, so your thumb covers it when you turn the page?

One of the most unsettling shorts I've seen in years, from the anthology "Fear(s) of the Dark". The way it plays with strange sounds and vague shapes barely seen in the dark makes my hair stand on end every time.

Enjoy.

I had a book of scary stories as a kid that were pretty damn good. One of them reminds me of that.

A man begins building a puzzle at his kitchen table. As he keeps building, he sees the picture begins to form a creepy face. As he keeps going it gets fucking scarier and scarier, he's not even paying attention really to the rest of it because he wants to see what this really fucking creepy face is staring at. When he finishes he realizes that its the kitchen window.

"And the face...the face was there too."

If there's two of them, one just has to start trying to break in your window at the front side while the other just waits in the backyard for you to run there.

Unless you try and get away upstairs. Then all they have to do is block the door and light a fire. If you try and jump, those broken legs won't get you away from them.

By the way, don't go in the cellar. Just. Don't.

You guys know how fungus works, right?

It starts with a little spore. Just a tiny speck of dust, like a floating tentacle monster embryo.

If it gets onto a substance it can survive in it grows tiny roots and digs itself in. Not roots like a tree, these roots are like tiny fiberclass organic strands. So thin, they can branch out and surround the surrounding area until there's more thread than meat.
Then they begin to secrete a strong digestive acid, turning the meat around them into a soft pulp; its not an unfair comparison to say it does on the inside what a spider does to the outside while it liquifies the insides of an insect to consume.

The fungus grows until it can release more spores. Sometimes it will passively emit them, like breathing, using a small nub that erupts through the skin of its host; if scratched or damaged it will simply release all the spores it has inside at once, filling the area with its tiny tentacle embryonic offspring. If its tendrils meet another of its kind, the two will merge and become like a single entity; a large growth will erupt where they have met, which will exhale spores in a vast radius. As more and more of these spores are released and meet the surrounding area becomes like a single organism made up of hundreds of thousands of acid-emitting hairs. Once these hairs overtake the host entirely, filling every crevice of its body until there's no more room to move and grow, they expand outwards, making the subject that is far more fungus than its original state resemble a cotton ball, or appropriately enough a creature caught in a spiderweb.

It's something I've always found Mignola in particular excels at. The fact that he rarely illustrates pupils gives an impression of eyes staring straight out at the reader since they don't indicat a direction. Coupled with this is how he devotes panels to statues, paintings, and pictures in his pages. They're atmospheric and give a sense of history/depth/weight, but always leave you with the impression that they've been watching for decades themselves.

Dum dum, I go for night walks in the woods all the time. I'm drinking a beer preparing for one right now. Worst thing out there is hobos. Coyotes and deer ain't got shit if you make a lot of noise while walking. Hell, greentext time.

>get home around 11:30 from work
>warm summer night 72F
>time to walk in the woods
>light up a cigar (place I work at is a booze and cigar store)
>hike for an hour through dead red oaks (common disease killed em) and buckthorn (invasive shit) only seeing skunks, the occasional bat, and hearing owls
>near full moon, no leaves on dead trees, everything bathed in pale moonlight
>finally reach the swampy pond that marks my turning point
>moon reflected on the pond, crickets and frogs creating a familiar soundscape
>this is why I walk at night; complete bliss
>suddenly yips and squeals erupt from behind me
>coyotes? I didn't see any on the path to the pond
>to the left of the forest that I walked through is a prairie reserve, a meticulously kept endangered biome, wide open plains of grass and mud
>I turn on the flashlight of my phone
>dozens of eyes light up 30 feet from me
>yipping intensifies
>only options are the mile long unmarked path through dead oak trees or a mad dash to the highway that cuts through the forest
>highway is across the pond with the nearest route taking me towards the coyotes
>decide to back slowly towards the highway bringing myself closer to those blue reflective eyes
>they don't make a sound
>they don't even move
>they just watch
>as I round the pond, getting closer to a 60~ yard dash through muddy prairie to my goal, I hear them begin to yip
>several of the pairs of blue eyes begin to move
>instinctively start SWEARING AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS and get the fuck out of there
>FUGGIN PISS SHITTING YOTE ASS FUGGERS EAT CUNT FUUUCK
>blind run
>jump highway barrier
>6 mile walk home, muddy and startled

Shit. I know yotes don't normally mess with people, but I've never seen over 10 coyotes at once.

A raptor's incredibly sharp talons being gored into your skill by surprisingly powerful muscles while the bird itself is traveling some 60-90 miles an hour. It's not going to rip your head off, but if it goes low and gets the base of your neck near your spine and tags your jugular an owl absolutely CAN kill you. They just often don't because they know your skull isn't a field mouse or a cat.

I remember one night when I was a kid in bed watching Timon & Pumbaa on Toon Disney. I can't recall what the episode name was, but at some point in the episode they were doing that classic trope where they're underground burrowing and ending up in different places like ending up in China upside down & so on. At some point during the sequence, Timon & Pumbaa somehow wound up digging a hole above a fiery pit giving off cries that were implied to be hell. That one shot really fucked with my head.

Luckily I work overnights in a warehouse with 30 other people and it's always daytime when I sleep.

I bet they're still out there though.

I know this might shock or even disturb /co/, but as a kid I used to get up early (usually around 6, but could be a little earlier) and flip on CN the second I got downstairs.

Obviously, if it was before 6, I'd see the still screen in question, but it never bothered me. In fact, I thought it was kind of comforting; seemed like an adult-style Mediterranean setting. I understand why it would seem spooky, but it really never bothered me.

The text is a bunch of horseshit but it's pretty interesting how the way the eyes are painted do indeed make your brain think there's something behind you.

Like 4th wall breaking stuff like Morrison Animal Man?
Or like stuff that leaves you with an anxious or unsettling feeling like you're not safe.

Providence does this a lot.

Something creepy will be going on or something that doesn't make sense and the character on pane will be looking through a panel like a Window a Door directly at the reader, instead of directly at what is going on that we can see.

Russians make the best creepypastas, in my opinion. There is just something psychologically draining about the post-soviet entourage, small shitty apartments, eerie forgotten villages, social services that do fuck nothing to help mistreated children, constant darkness of the unlit streets... The pastas are often just the perfect mixture of supernatural, psychological and mundane horror of living in the shittier parts of Moskow or St. Petersburg, the latter being practically the spook capital of Russia (have been living there for three years, seen some spoopy shit). I'm planning on translating some of the best russian pastas and dumping them on /x/ when I have spare time.
