To be honest most of the takes I've seen on Rivera's America book *even from fans of the character* have been: I'm not enjoying this, but maybe some queer latin teen is and it's more important that they do than that I do. Which is some pussyfoot approach to criticism even in the absolute best light.

Marvel is fond of grabbing prose authors who seem on-point for a book or character and putting them into comics and sometimes that really works. But there's also a perception that prose is above comics and that really does NOT work because a lot of prose first-timers totally fail out at comics construction. I would bet that the new Generation X is going to appeal to the same market as America but be a lot better because the person writing it has experience in the industry, has worked as a colorist for a long time, has written for a serial TV show and has written their own serial (web)comic. That is a lot better as comic book experience than just being of the same approximate minority group as a character. It's one reason why I see DC's "we train you to write comics" workhouse as a lot healthier than Marvel's grab-bag of new talents.

Superhero comics should be about superheroes first and foremost. The superhero them self can be of any gender, race, sexuality, or creed provided the focus is on them being a superhero.

Can race, gender, sexuality, and/or creed inform the character? Absolutely and it should, but it should NEVER be the focus of the character. Even in PSA comics the story should still be about the superhero being a superhero.

She's the antithesis of Gene Luen Yang. Like imagine Yang wrote about the Chinese American and all his narratives and characters are exactly the thing people think about when they think of Chinese American/Chinese stereotypes and Yang's writing fails to convince you otherwise. That's how her characters feel like, they're the caricature and stereotype of those kinds of people.
Worst thing is they really can't call her out because of who she is. Because she has got the seal of authenticity and no matter how absurd shit gets, she won't be called out for it.

The fatal flaw in a lot of diversity comics is that characters are defined by their race, gender, sexuality, etc. and nothing more. What I don't get is why Marvel scooped this nobody off of tumblr and gave them this comic. Did they really think people would buy it? Why not get a good writer with some recognition to give it a much needed boost?

Even though Waid is shit now I'd understand why he'd be put on a potentially low selling comic. This comic needed all the help it could get and Marvel just grabbed this person. They might as well burn money, it's just as wasteful.

What's really sad is they used to get it. Generation X was a book built around diversity and it was great. The whole point was making characters that weren't defined by their stereotypes and they did a great job of it. Now "diversity" is about fetishizing those qualities. Then they use progressiveness like a shield to ignore any legitimate criticism of their half assed approach.
