Why didn't any of the other live action movies come even remotely close to the cinematography of the original 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Kino?

The first one was made outside of the Hollywood system, with music video director Steve Barron working very closely with Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird and made under the auspices of Golden Harvest, an actual HK-based kung fu movie studio. So, they pretty much did whatever they wanted. After the movie came out to both runaway success and controversy, combining corporate control by committee with the pressure from parent groups led to the sequels having the edges sanded off. Like, a lot of the perception of TMNT 1990 is that it was darker than it actually was, because it was literally darker. There was a deliberately foreboding atmosphere to much of the movie, and that's what made it so cool...

...so you can see how with the sequels they made sure everything was brightly lit and blocked to be as warm and friendly as possible, to make sure kids and more importantly, the kids' parents, felt "safe" taking little Timmy to see The Secret of the Ooze.

Is this why other movies always centered around Raphael?
>>
>>91567059
Yeah, in my experience, the 1990 movie is really what popularized Raphael to most people. Even in the 4kids series, they were very explicitly just writing him as movieRaph, complete with thick Brooklyn accent.

Barron was actually fired by New Line after production wrapped because the film was "too dark" and New Line flipped because it was way darker than what they were told by Golden Harvest after New Line had got a shitload of marketing partners. The planned cut based on the script would have landed it a PG-13 which would have been fatal for the film as well.

That's why the sequels had almost everyone replaced and New Line putting way more executive mandate to have a lighter tone in the script and film itself and no one has learned since. Even the Bay produced films.

The first one's an unironic cult classic because it's well made and with a great script that people remembered. Even serious critics were pretty enamoured with it (Ebert said it was probably one of the best kids films ever made because it wasn't afraid to talk straight to the audience instead of talking down while being dark, mysterious and "cool")

I really wonder how the average modern capeshit viewer would find this movie. Chances are it would be trashed for being 'too dark' and having those old special effects instead of muh CG

You can't even get mainstream 'adult' movies anymore with New York that looks like this movie. And this was a movie about four teenage mutant turtles who beat up ninjas. Fucking Nolan's Batman looked sterile in comparison.

And most of it was shot in North Carolina on a really tight budget considering the scope of the film. Especially since the Anamatronics were new territory with how the facial animations were controlled by puppeteers while Stuntmen were in the costumes and they were afraid they would break with how intense the action scenes were.

The product of a different time when Hollywood was nowhere near as sanitized as it was, really. Had someone made that script now, they would have been immediately rejected for all the character development and world building it established instead of having a big opening action scene

Millennial numales would never watch this movie so they're ignorant / dismissive of it.
Then you have the severe TMNT autists who want Triceratons and Utroms and reincarnated Japanese spirits etc and won't settle on anything less.

Honestly how did they even fucking manage to get their expressions so synced up with the action? Look at Leo's furious face at the start.

It sounds like the exact opposite scenario The Guyver and its sequel went through which is interesting considering they were produced by the same company and released at around the same time.

Or maybe people just wanted another good movie in the same style of the first one.
