Well, that was kind of the point, I think. What happened to him sucked but he was being an ass about it, trying to drag eveyone down and make them more miserable than him. Woody, on the other hand, would bring everyone together to make the best of a bad situation.

Well, Stinky Pete wasn't psychopathic or insane or really evil at all.

In his warped mind, he did care about Woody and company and thought he was doing was best for them.

Plus he got over it and is now a pimp while Lotso suffers a fate worse than death.

That's exactly what they were gunning for, an absolutely atrocious character with zero redemption points. The entire flashback wasn't supposed to make him sympathetic but to make him understandable.

Not really, other than that Stinky Pete sought status from being loved by humans, and Lotso mostly seemed to care about his control over other toys. They were far too similar in their philosophy and motivations though, which was one of the reasons I wasn't as enthusiastic about Toy Story 3 as some people.
