I kinda love this episode cause its insidiously meta. Summer is us, the viewers, who think Rick is a cool meme dude who saves the day with science while being oh so nihilistic and smart. Morty is the writers showing us a laundry list of monsterous actions. Of course we don't listen to Morty we just think Rick is a tortured man with the heart of a hero.

But he's not. He's a fucking terrorist who cares for whatever makes him feel good. His heroic moments and mere blips in his endless quest to forget about everything by chasing a high. Or Asian sauce. Either or

Rick lives a hedonistic lifestyle. He does what he wants, when he wants, and damn the consequences on a multidimensional scale. Also I dont understand the divorce of Beth and Jerry. It makes zero sense. Of course, what Jerry said was stupid and it backfired on him, but:

I'd be surprised too if this exact same concept hadn't been done in like five shows by now. Rick is conflicted even to himself on how much he cares about Morty and his family. On one hand he clearly likes them, or at least likes being around them, on the other hand his absurdist view of the universe means he doesn't want to care too much about them because its just as likely as not that something random will take them all away from him. He intentionally isolates himself and doesn't give a shit because giving a shit will just make it worse when everything falls in on him. But he still does give a shit.

This shit seems pretty simple to me:

They don't want to write Rick into a box. They need him to be an enigma so that they are not creatively constrained by canon. In doing this they are able to preserve the feeling of "This is my first episode and I don't feel totally lost" while still being able to have some things carry over from previous episodes. I think they hated the position they put themselves in with the S2 finale, and this was their way of refuting that.

After all, Rick has access to infinite worlds, he could just go to a world made of szechuan sauce if he wanted. This takes that plot hole and accepts it because its a better alternative than being bound to continuity. Rick needs to be able to be a bastard and be able to love morty whenever the writers get a cool idea.
