I blame the continued creation of harem animes.

The male cuckold meme has always been played for humor, going back to Shakespeare, and before that. The female cuckquean meme was usually played for drama, and obstacle for the female protagonist to overcome on her journey to true love.

following in the wake of the hugely popular cuck meme, the cuckquean meme has been warped to be more about sadism and humor than about drama. that's the only thing that's new.

Depends on the character and the context.
It's a change of pace in some instances, in others it seems like a cheap ploy to get audiences to sympathize and root for the character.

I like to think it's part of the horseshoe effect. Basically people started to get really tired of the "protagonist gets a girlfriend/boyfriend for no other reason other by virtue of being the protagonist"

Unfortunately, they decided to take this and move it in the furthest direction possible. This has been the case for male characters since around 2009, they are only getting around to doing this to female characters because "you can't inflicted any hardship onto a female character unles it is well established that it is something men also suffer through"

I think it was always a somewhat popular trope, only it was mostly found in girly media, particularly tween girls. (Oh noes, Hotty-hot McHotboi is dating that Genric Smug Evil Skank, who I so, totally hate.)
Hopefully it will instill in the minds of young girls that they don't have golden vaginas, and that if they're going to be less than desirable, they might lose their desirable guy to a more desirable girl.
