>>Moon Girl's sales are at 9,000. 11,000 less than the cancellation threshold.
>>Moon Girl solves the problem of not one, but TWO events (Monsters Unleashed and Inhumans vs. X-Men)
>>Already in Marvel Future Fight and Avengers Academy games.
>>On top of that, regularly guest stars in multiple books and is about to join a team book soon.
WHY?! I would say nobody likes this character, but I see a Twitter defense force for her! Why are they so determined to push such an annoying character?
>>
There's a Scholastic deal that means individual issue sales are much less important for this book. Cancellation numbers are more like 15,000 than 20,000 now too.

If you paid attention to comics news rather than looking for books to hate you might know this.
>>
>>91438196

>Why are they so determined to push such an annoying character?

Because if little black girls don't have stongf, intellijunt, role models like Moon Girl and Iron Heart they either commit suicide or have 20 welfare babies with 20 different daddies.
>>
>>91438235
>There's a Scholastic deal
Meaning what other than Scholastic is a book company?
>>
>>91438196
>Why are they so determined to push such an annoying character?
You know exactly why
>>
>people still read modern comics
But why?
>>
>>91438487
Moon Girl sells at Scholastic book fairs. If you don't understand how that's an avenue to higher sales with things like Smile in the market then you are ignorant in a way that you will not be able to have a discussion about sales/viability.

Do you remember when Champions #1 had like 400,000 pre-orders? That was from a Scholastic deal too.
>>
>>91438487
Nobody knows what a Scholastic deal here is but it's only speculated on. I think it's just because Marvel has noted that young adult stuff sells well in the bookstore market and they need their own.
>>
>>91438509
...because someone wants to create a market for western loli?

This is just "I want to bitch/be racist" which is nothing but an echo chamber and a bunch of people pretending to be triggered/outraged.

The reason this book is still around is because it has avenues outside of the direct market. A weirder book to have gone on as long as it did would be like, Hellcat. I can't explain why Hellcat got so many issues, maybe it was a PR thing. But I can say why Moon Girl is still going, which is apparently your question. Or did you just want a thread for the first thing?

Please note I don't read Moon Girl and I'm not saying it's good. This is jus why it's still around with 9k sales, and also a demographic it does sell to that you won't necessarily see.
>>
>>91438487
Book fairs are very popular, stuff you haven't even heard of like El Deafo has sold well over a million copies because of book fairs
>>
>>91438196

The thing is, if it were a self-contained all-ages book, there wouldn't even be reason for hate. But they just HAVE to push her in the other books, right?
>>
>>91438789
That's an argument a hell of a lot of people on all sides of comics would try to sell you, for sure. Some people think that should be the way you go for most/all comics.
>>
>>91438807
>But they just HAVE to push her in the other books, right?

#blacklivesmatter
It's about changing the narrative and normalizing strong smart and proud black female characters.
>>
>>91438807
It's actually not bad.
Moon Girl herself may turn you off, though. She can be irritating, since they're trying to make her actually behave like how a nine-year-old might if she knew for a fact that she's smarter than everyone around her.

But in the context of the greater Marvel universe, yes, she is terrible.

Why do we have to pretend we're le ironic shitposting on /pol/ here BTW?
>>
>>91438196
>Why are they so determined to push such an annoying character?

I think calling her annoying isn't really fair when it's her being pushed that makes her annoying.

I really believe there to be an almost impossible tightrope for comicbook companies, specifically popular/well known companies to walk. And that is this line between what sells, what actual buyers and readers enjoy. Whether they be long time supporters or new audiences ( I personally don't really think there's is that much difference.) and what media/attention seekers, career complainers, and an honest to god audience that does actually enjoy comics but feel under represented. The latter group doesn't do much really to help or harm direct sales. But they absolutely some affect on merchandising and alternative media (tv and movies). And since even on their best day comic sales won't match up to profits from licensed properties they choose to take a minor hit by continuing to feature characters prominently that are not performing rather than risk a tidal wave of bad press that could actually affect their main source of income.
>>
>>91438946
I'm only half being ironic
Many people legitimately believe that it's the responsibility and duty of art creators to push that narrative
>>
>>91438807
>The thing is, if it were a self-contained all-ages book, there wouldn't even be reason for hate. But they just HAVE to push her in the other books, right?
That's my problem. Like, she pops up EVERYWHERE. And she's just an eyesore with an ugly costume and usually uglier civilian clothes.

The worst thing is that she breaks my immersion in comics completely. Kamala? Miles? I can buy them running around. Even Ironheart I can buy. You're actually racist.
>>
>>91438807
>But they just HAVE to push her in the other books, right?
There are two reasons for that, number 1 marketing to get her more known and all that. Number 2 is that Marvel won't let any book stay on its own and is constantly making everyone mix with something else.
>>
>>91439275

And it's largely at odds with her actual comic, where her attempts at gaining respect are half the point.

Then in other books you've got her saving the mutant race while stopping a superhuman war, giving lectures at some sort of interdimensional(?) college, and now joining a no-shit superhero team.

This is the biggest problem, she still goes to school and is still treated like a kid in her book. Even after the worlds smartest thing. Everywhere else they play it like she is some big shot. It's like the writers don't consult each other at all.
>>
Is there any data that they use a substantially higher marketing budget for this title compared to other comics?
>>
>>91439334
Her book is written and marketed specifically for children.

Despite claims to the contrary, it's Marvel's ONLY all-ages title that isn't made using screencaps of the cartoons, and it's sales are pretty much what the Marvel Adventures line would pull down on a good day.

That... that actually sounds like a pretty good description. Well, and for Marvel overall these days.

>>91439283
Not so much number 2. As for number 1, yeah sure, but done completely wrong. Having a little girl with DEVIL DINOSAUR show up to help on occasion sounds like it could be funny. Having the girl show up and one-up the comic's genius and solve the whole problem... yeah, that's far from OK.

Like, it's ok having a cool obscure character or from a minor book show up in one event might win points with the fans. It's part of what made Cosmic Marvel so based a few years ago. But doing it Poochie style? Yeah, that's certain to backfire.
>>
>>91439449
Because that's a skill you have to develop.

Which is something that bothers me about the character..
Since she's the "world's smartest person" she knows everything about everything automatically, when given her age it's pretty much impossible for her to have read all that shit.

>>91439476
I think the decided Squirrel Girl and Hellcat were "all-ages" after the fact to justify keeping such poorly-selling books afloat.

>It's like the writers don't consult each other at all.

it's a problem that's been going on for a long time since Quesada was EIC. It worked under Quesada for a while because a lot of the stories were strong enough (to readers that hadn't read many Marvel comics) to make up for it.

>Reprinting the first three issues of select titles at a suggested retail price of $3.00, TIMELY COMICS will take you on a path through the restored Marvel Universe! Whether it’s the formation of the Avengers, Daredevil’s fight for Chinatown, or the birth of the Totally Awesome Hulk, TIMELY COMICS has it all and so much more!

They're not.

SJWs think they can though.

Just like how having black sports role models, black actors, and a fucking black president of the united states didn't change jack shit in the black community. If anything, they're worse off now.

I think it's hilarious that her own book is pretty alright, they aren't going balls out with the whole "smartest girl in the world". But when other authors get ahold of her, it all goes to shit. And they keep giving her to their worst writers, who consider "smartest in the world" as the ultimate deus ex machina,

You're right that the Bookscan link is useful (especially since it tallies up the sales for the entire year) but that Amazon link basically shows what's selling currently, so it's also useful when you want to look at what books (that were released long ago managed to stay high on the chart). Like for instance Flinstones vol 1 was released in late March so it's still kinda early to tell how well it'll do on charts till the end of the year, and even then you'd have to wait till next year to see how much interest there is in it. Squirrel Girl vol 1 on the other hand was released Nov 2015, so its presence high on the chart for Marvel's books means it's selling well for them.

Remember when the whole controversy was going on over Mockingbird and it was noted that it boosted sales on the book at Amazon?

https://www.bleedingcool.com/2016/10/28/marvel-to-publish-mockingbird-my-feminist-agenda-as-vol-1-is-amazons-best-selling-superhero-comic/

>So much so that Mockingbird Vol 1: Let Me Explain is the current bestselling superhero graphic novel on Amazon right now. Marvel’s best seller too. And the sixth biggest selling graphic novel.

According to the listing today:

https://www.amazon.com/Mockingbird-Vol-Explain-Chelsea-Cain/dp/1302901222/

It's #186 in the superhero category, and #97 of Marvel's best-seller list.

So I'd definitely say Squirrel Girl is a consistent success despite the debate over the quality of writing and art.

>>

Also for those wondering about where Moon Girl ranks on Amazon currently:

https://www.amazon.com/Moon-Girl-Devil-Dinosaur-Vol/dp/1302900056/

#13 in Teens/superhero category
#20 in Marvel category
#46 in general superhero category

So yes, this and the Scholastic and Bookscan examples mentioned earlier is likely why it hasn't been canceled.

There was.
You're just stupid for only being aware of Moon Girl now. She isn't new. The only thing new is that she showed up in an America Chavez comic that triggers /co/.
>>
>>91438196
Because people who don't actually read comics, but who get off on policing the media that others ingest, are browbeating Marvel into meeting their demands.
>>
>>91438196
Movie in the MCU when?
>>
>>91438196

Because money. Moon Girl sells well in bookstores and on digital (neither of which are tracked on Diamond sales charts) and the trade editions of the series are some of Marvel's top sellers.

Trades and digital sales are more profitable than physical monthly comics, and until that changes, Moon Girl is worth more to Marvel than a lot of their other heroes, even those whose monthly titles outsell hers.

let me guess: her characterization on books different from her own is completely fucked up.
(case in point: Amerca #2)

I dislike more the fact that, outside her book, she doesn't act like a 10-years-old with limited knowledge and limited social skills(because 10 years old)

Fem Moon Knight is still Moon Knight.

>>91439544
>Since she's the "world's smartest person" she knows everything about everything automatically, when given her age it's pretty much impossible for her to have read all that shit.
IIRC it was a plot-point in her own book.

>>
>>91439060
The funny thing is that you think they need to be in touch.

Marvel is but a small piece of a global Jewish media conglomerate, and their movies are plenty profitable thanks to Chinese people and their awful taste in everything. They don't mind underwriting unprofitable ventures like these because they're a small drop in the bucket. It's more important that they brainwash kids with this Jewified shit.
>>
What if moon girl was korean
>>
>>91452205
It's true though. ITT you have a bunch of people with some awareness of the market and the comics talking numbers and the content of the comic vs. her guest-starring roles, and you have a bunch of other people with none of that knowledge being performatively racist or talking about how it's cuz she's black/cuz the Jews want it/cuz Marvel is SJW.

What's ironic is that's also the kind of rhetoric you get on tumblr or SJW twitter about why books are important or selling. Neither of you pay attention to shit, you only see race and your own dogwhistles.

>>
>>91438789
If it makes a net profit of even a dollar, it's worth doing

The reason they cancel series below the threshold isn't because they don't make money - its because of lost potential and resource allocation. They could make more money if they do something else.

If they're gonna continue Moon Girl regardless, there is no reason for them not to put out floppies so long as they make any profit

This is why some series that do well outside of floppies stay around despite godawful sales.
>>
>>91453950
Unless that evolves into swapping with other things, that seems like a relatively useless power
>>
>>91457723
It is.
I'd guess that Reeder pitched the book without that aspect and editorial only gave it the green light on the condition she make Moon Girl an Inhuman.
