Actually Mary Marvel came out before Supergirl, alot of these similarities were DC trying to match Captain Marvel who was outselling them at the time. Capt. Marvel was originally owned by Fawcett comics then got shafted/out of business in like the 70s. By the time DC acquired the rights Marvel already came out with their own Captain Marvel, so they just started using the Shazam title.

Captain Marvel AKA Shazam has a lot of issues with casting. They have to cast the guy playing "Shazam" himself, the child actor who is going to play Billy, and they have to set it up so that we don't have a Harry Potter problem where the actors immediately look like they are in their 20s by the third film when they are supposed to be children the entire time.

Marvel seems to make up some of their scripts kind of quickly now. Like I think they even choose variations on their scrips based on whether actors sign on for contract extensions or not. But even with Iron Man they supposedly didn't have much of the dialogue written when they were filming and it still came out all right.

Somehow they are still able to make movies that are successful. It's rather unusual for a movies series.

Marvel is trash that doesn't warrant patronage but it's not hard to say that it hits the beats it wants- that being normal fag pandering.

The only good live action cape shit in cinema (in terms of both current works and potential products) is X-men. X-men (through Legion) and Marvel's Daredevil are also the only decent serialised cape shows. I would love defenders not to suck but, given that there's only ONE compelling character with a good prior canon of work in serialised media I don't think that's the winning position.

2007, actually. Well, that's when he was first attached to the project.

But it's never had a director and never had money to do any real development, probably because it's a New Line, not a Warner Bros. project. For you see...

Back in the early 2000s New Line was a studio in its own right. They'd had some hits - like the Mask - and they'd had some flops, but their founders had overall done very well for themselves and Time Warner had eventually acquired it from Turner Broadcasting System in the mid-90s. As it came with the already-produced and very successful Mask that year, this was a happy arrangement. Rather than roll it up into Warner Bros, Time Warner kept New Line separate, doing its own thing, which is far from unusual (look at FOX, for example - where there are actually multiple studios working under the FOX brand).

Then New Line struck it BIG. The Lord of the Rings movies were produced by New Line; every one, in today's money, a billion-dollar gross. Vast amounts of licensed merch (different to other LotR merch which already existed and continues to) was sold; there were plans for a Hobbit adaptation. The movies continued releasing, having been mostly shot back to back, for three solid years. It was incredible. Everybody wanted it to continue.

But New Line said it wasn't profitable, and withheld payments from Peter Jackson and dozens of others who were owed money from their work and from the use of the likeness in merchandise. New Line still wouldn't budge even when the lawsuits began, and it rumbled on for years - killing off goodwill from the cast and crew while the hype for the series quietly died off over time.

In 2007, wondering where the hell their money was, Time Warner took an interest. New Line's accounts were called in and examined. Eventually, in 2008 Time Warner took over, settled (paid up without accepting fault or liability for consequential loss) the lawsuits, turned New Line into a banner at Warner Bros. (not a real studio any more), and fired the two founders of New Line. It took several more years to develop the Hobbit movies, get everybody back on board, and get them made and released.

So what "New Line" is left with today is the following:

That's where Shazam comes in. It's a legacy contract; that's why it's still rocking the New Line banner even though it's a DCEU at WB. Everybody has to deal with New Line and call it New Line because that's what everybody agreed when they agreed to make the picture. And therein lies the problem.

Nobody wants to make a New Line superhero picture. WB don't want to make a Shazam picture (for the same reasons National Comics didn't want Captain Marvel to exist back in the 50s); they'd probably rather use the Rock's name on something else, and in any case he's so hot right now they may not be able to find a shooting space for several years, which makes it hard to attach directors, which means no crew, which means no movie.

tl;dr it's fucked because somebody got greedy before the contract was even signed but it was signed before anybody else realize what had gone wrong at New Line
